The electrophoretic mobility of fluorite from Ok Bang Mine has been measured in a variety of in organic electrolytes, omstly at constant ionic strength and controlled pH. The electrokinetic behavior of fluorite was affected not only by the pCa but also by the pH. the isoelectric points of this mineral were found to lie at pCa 2.6 and pH 7.6.

Influence of sodium metasilicate and ferric salt on the flotation of barite by sodium oleate in the Hallimond tube were examined. Sodium oleate floats barite well. Addition of sodium metasilicate depresses the barite and the depressing action of sodium metasilicate is due to colloidal silica evolved from the sodium metasilicate. Ferric salt is an effective depressant. The depressing action of ferric salt is stronger than the depressing action of sodium meta silicate. The depressing action of sodium metasilicate followed by ferric salt and the depressing action of ferric salt is almost the same, Presumably it is because of chemical reaction of sodium metasilicate and ferric salt.

The attachment of selected particles to air bubbles represents the crucial step in all separations by flotation. It denotes an establishment of a three-phase contact : solid-liguid-air. In this review some of the contributions of contact angle to flotation theory are examined. The equilibrium contact angle and the arguments for a minimum and maximum floatable size are discussed. The studies generated from combining the Gibbs adsorption and Young equations are also reviewed.

Effect of sodium silicate on the flotation of calcite, scheelite and fluorite by sodium oleate in the Hallimond tube was examined. Sodium silicate used are three kinds: the molar ratio of SiO_2 to Na_2O is 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 respectively. The higher the modar ratio of sodium silicate, the stronger the depression of the minerals, indicating that the depressing action is due to SiO(OH)_3^- ion evolved from the sodium silicate.

Hallimond tube flotation experiments have been carried out on barite using dodecylammonium chloride as collector. The main variables studied were potassium nitrate, sodium sulpahte, barium nitrate and sodium dimetasilicate (concentration and pH). Barite may be floated when dodecylammonium chloride is used. Since flotation recovery was lowered when the pH was reduced below about 11, this confirms that co-adsorption of un-ionized amine is necessary for good flotation. Addition of potassium nitrate and sodium sulphate marked activation on flotation recovery at pH 6.0. Sodium dimetasilicate lowered floatation recovery and barium nitrate had no immediate effect on flotation recovery. Attention must be drawn to the need for more thorough studies on barium and water interface.

The dispersion effect of sodium silicate on limestone is studied experimentally. The variables adopted are the concentration of sodium silicate, pH of the pulp and the molar ratio of SiO_2/Na_2O of sodium silicate. Among the molar ratios 1:1 and 2:1 the latter shows better dispersion than the former. Among the pHs 8.7 and 10.7 the former shows better dispersion than the latter. In the case of using the sodium silicate of molar ratio 2:1, the effect of dispersion increases rapidly at the concentration over 100㎎/ℓ than those below 100㎎/ℓ. From the viewpoint above-mentioned, it is concluded that the main entity which gives the dispersion must be colloidal silica among many species evolved by the hydrolysis and dissociation of sodium silicate.

In the case of pre-treatment using sodium silicate followed by ferric salt, however, the higher the molar ratio of sodium silicate, the weaker the depressing action, showing that the entity of depre-ssing in this case is quite or somewhat different from the above-mentioned colloidal silica. Anyhow, calcite only is completely depressed by the pre-treatment using sodium silicate followed by ferric salt.
