        Thyroid-Associated Orbitopathy: Evaluating Microstructural Changes of Extraocular Muscles and Optic Nerves Using Readout-Segmented Echo-Planar Imaging-Based Diffusion Tensor Imaging

        Objective: We aimed to investigate the ability of readout-segmented echo-planar imaging (rs-EPI)-based diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in assessing the microstructural change of extraocular muscles (EOMs) and optic nerves in patients with thyroidassociated orbitopathy (TAO) as well as in evaluating disease activity. Materials and Methods: We enrolled 35 TAO patients and 22 healthy controls (HCs) who underwent pre-treatment rs-EPIbased DTI. Mean, axial, and radial diffusivity (MD, AD, and RD) and fractional anisotropy (FA) of the medial and lateral EOMs and optic nerve for each orbit were calculated and compared between TAO and HC groups and between active and inactive TAO groups. Factors such as age, sex, disease duration, mediation, and smoking history between groups were also compared. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the predictive value of significant variables for disease activity. Results: Disease duration was significantly shorter in active TAOs than in inactive ones (p < 0.001). TAO patients showed significantly lower FA and higher MD, AD, and RD than HCs for both medial and lateral EOMs (p < 0.001), but not the AD value of lateral EOMs (p = 0.619). Active patients had significantly higher FA, MD, and AD than inactive patients for medial EOMs (p < 0.005), whereas only FA differed significantly in the lateral EOMs (p = 0.018). The MD, AD, and RD of optic nerves were significantly lower in TAO patients than HCs (p < 0.05), except for FA (p = 0.129). Multivariate analysis showed that the MD of medial EOMs and disease duration were significant predictors for disease activity. The combination of these two parameters showed optimal diagnostic efficiency for disease activity (area under the curve, 0.855; sensitivity, 68.4%; specificity, 96.9%). Conclusion: rs-EPI-based DTI is promising in assessing microstructural changes of EOMs and optic nerves and can help to indicate the disease activity of TAO, especially through the MD of medial EOMs.

      • Influence of Intravenous Contrast Medium on Dose Calculation Using CT in Treatment Planning for Oesophageal Cancer

        Objective: To evaluate the effect of intravenous contrast on dose calculation in radiation treatment planning for oesophageal cancer. Methods: A total of 22 intravein-contrasted patients with oesophageal cancer were included. The Hounsfield unit (HU) value of the enhanced blood stream in thoracic great vessels and heart was overridden with 45 HU to simulate the non-contrast CT image, and 145 HU, 245 HU, 345 HU, and 445 HU to model the different contrast-enhanced scenarios. 1000 HU and -1000 HU were used to evaluate two non-physiologic extreme scenarios. Variation in dose distribution of the different scenarios was calculated to quantify the effect of contrast enhancement. Results: In the contrast-enhanced scenarios, the mean variation in dose for planning target volume (PTV) was less than 1.0%, and those for the total lung and spinal cord were less than 0.5%. When the HU value of the blood stream exceeded 245 the average variation exceeded 1.0% for the heart V40. In the non-physiologic extreme scenarios, the dose variation of PTV was less than 1.0%, while the dose calculations of the organs at risk were greater than 2.0%. Conclusions: The use of contrast agent does not significantly influence dose calculation of PTV, lung and spinal cord. However, it does have influence on dose accuracy for heart.

      • Expression and Significance of TSGF, CEA and AFP in Patients Before and after Radical Surgery for Colon Cancer

        Objective: To explore the expression and significance of tumor specific growth factor (TSGF), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and alpha fetoprotein (AFP) in cancer tissue and serum of patients with colon cancer. Materials and Methods: Radical surgery for colon cancer was performed on 43 patients with laparoscopu under conditions of general anesthesia. The Elisa method was used to detect the levels of serum TSGF, CEA and AFP before and after radical operation, and cancer tissue underwent TSGF, CEA and AFP immunohistochemistry staining after laparoscopic surgery. The decreased conditions of serum TSGF, CEA and AFP in patients with colon cancer at different levels of differentiation and clinical stagings were analyzed, and the relationships of expression rates between histological types, colon cancer morphology, lymph node metastasis and TSGF, CEA as well as AFP in cancer tissue were assessed. Results: Compared with before radical surgery, the levels of serum TSGF, CEA and AFP decreased notably in patients after operations (p<0.01). The decreased degree of TSGF and CEA was the largest in patients with poorly differentiated cancer tissue (p<0.01), while that of AFP was noted in patients with moderately differentiated cancer tissue (p<0.01). The decreased degree of TSGF and AFP was the largest in patients at phase Dukes A (p<0.01), while that of CEA in patients at phase Dukes C (p<0.01). There were no significant differences among the positive expression rates of TSGF, CEA and AFP with different histological types and colon cancer morphologies (p>0.05). The positive expression rates of TSGF and CEA in patients with lymph node metastasis were significantly higher than those without lymph node metastasis (p<0.01). Conclusions: TSGF, CEA and AFP can be used to evaluate the effect of radical operation for colon cancer, and the changed levels of different markers are associated with tumor differentiation, clinical stating and presence or absence of lymph node metastasis.

        Studies on the Temperature Control System of the Geothermal-Source Heat Pump under Different Modes

        Geothermal-source heat pump technology can increase the production efficiency and reduce the energy consumption. However, the application performance of the control system for the geothermal-source heat pump is always poor; such as a larger system operation energy consumption, low efficiency, poor stability and time effectiveness. In order to solve this issue, two advanced control strategies based on the research object of the geothermal-source heat pump temperature control system with different modes are developed: one is a feedforward-feedback control based on the variable speed integral PID control algorithm (“FFC-VSIPC”), the other is a feedforward-feedback control based on the fuzzy control algorithm (“FFC-FC”). The simulation and experimental studies of the effects of temperature control system in a geothermal-source heat pump by different models are carried out. The results shows that: (1) The overshoot of FFC-VSIPC is slightly larger than the FFC-FC when the set value is abruptly changed, but the adjustment time of FFC-VSIPC is shorter and there is no static error after the stabilization; (2) Changing the rate of flow interference suddenly, both FFC-VSIPC and FFC-FC can effectively eliminate the effects of interference with adding a feedforward control, also the adjustment time of FFC-VSIPC is greatly shortened than FFC-FC, but the stability of the adjustment is worse; (3) When the frequency amplification factor is suddenly changed, FFC-FC shows a non-stable control state of divergence gradually, FFC-VSIPC shows good robustness. The further comparisons between simulations and experiments reveal that FFC-VSIPC is better than FFC-FC in terms of the energy regulation and controlling of the geothermal source heat pump. Therefore, FFC-VSIPC is an advanced control strategy, which is worthy of research and application promotion.

        Two-dimensional As1-xPx binary compounds: Highly tunable electronic structure and optical properties

        We explored a two-dimensional (2D) binary compound consisting of arsenic and phosphorus by means of density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The geometry, electronic structure, and optical properties of monolayer, few-layer and bulk As1-xPx compounds with different composition ratio were investigated. We can achieve a more continuous tuning in band gap by change the composition and thickness. The band gap of As1-xPx monolayer was almost the same as that of phosphorene monolayer, regardless of the As concentration. However, the band gaps of few-layer systems decrease significantly. In the case of fewlayer systems, they can possess various band gap values those the pristine phosphorus system cannot reach. The direct-indirect band gap transition occurred at a certain threshold when the As concentration continuously increased. The more concentration of As was, the faster band gap decreased. The band gaps of their bulk systems were in the range of 0.3e0.4 eV, which is very close to that of bulk phosphorus and this was not sensitive to the composition and topological arrangement. The dielectric function calculations revealed that the optical properties of the arsenic phosphide systems were highly tunable by changing the composition and thickness. Overall, we propose that the tunable electronic and optical properties of the As1-xPx binary compounds make them great candidates for application in the field of electronics and optoelectronics.

        Design of an Input-Parallel Output-Parallel Multi-Module DC-DC Converter Using a Ring Communication Structure

        The design feasibility of a micro unidirectional DC transmission system based on an input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) converter is analyzed in this paper. The system consists of two subsystems: an input-parallel output-series (IPOS) subsystem to step up the DC link voltage, and an input-series output-parallel (ISOP) subsystem to step down the output voltage. The two systems are connected through a transmission line. The challenge of the delay caused by the communication in the control system is addressed by introducing a ring communication structure, and its influence on the control system is analyzed to ensure the feasibility and required performance of the converter system under practical circumstances. Simulation and experiment results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed design.

      • Anisotropic Effective Mass, Optical Property, and Enhanced Band Gap in BN/Phosphorene/BN Heterostructures

        <P>Phosphorene is receiving great research interests because of its peculiar physical properties. Nonetheless, the phosphorus has a trouble of degradation due to oxidation. Hereby, we propose that the electrical and optical anisotropic properties can be preserved by encapsulating into hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN). We found that the h-BN contributed to enhancing the band gap of the phosphorene layer. Comparing the band gap of the pristine phosphorene layer, the band gap of the phosphorene/BN(1ML) system was enhanced by 0.15 eV. It was further enhanced by 0.31 eV in the BN(1ML)/phosphorene/BN(1ML) trilayer structure. However, the band gap was not further enhanced when we increased the thickness of the h-BN layers even up to 4 MLs. Interestingly, the anisotropic effective mass and optical property were still preserved in BN/phosphorene/BN heterostructures. Overall, we predict that the capping of phosphorene by the h-BN layers can be an excellent solution to protect the intrinsic properties of the phosphorene.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2015/aamick.2015.7.issue-42/acsami.5b05694/production/images/medium/am-2015-05694z_0004.gif'></P>
