• Gold Nanospheres Assembled on Hydrogel Colloids Display a Wide Range of Thermoreversible Changes in Optical Bandwidth for Various Plasmonic-Based Color Switches

Lim, Sora,Song, Ji Eun,La, Ju A.,Cho, Eun Chul American Chemical Society 2014 Chemistry of materials Vol.26 No.10

An approach is presented that permits wide and reversible control of the optical bandwidth of spherical gold nanoparticles assembled on thermoreversible hydrogel colloids for various plasmonic-based thermochromisms. Temperature-dependent swelling and shrinking behaviors of the hydrogel colloids in aqueous systems manipulated assembly structures and optical signals of gold nanoparticles in the hybrid colloids. The optical bandwidths of the hybrid colloids increased with temperature, and thermoreversible bandwidth variations of the hybrid colloids were increased with the diameter of gold nanoparticles (from 15 to 51 nm). These hybrid colloids exhibited multiple colors switching during temperature changes (maximum four colors: wine ↔ violet ↔ dark blue ↔ faint blue). For the hybrid colloids showing a small bandwidth variation, another method was introduced to display different color switching.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

      • North Korean Leaders' Personality Reflection on Provocation Patterns: Narcissism and Fear

Lim, Sora,Ko, Sunghwah World Association for Triple Helix and Future Stra 2020 Journal of Contemporary Eastern Asia Vol.19 No.2

Over the last 70 years, South Korea has gone through countless provocations from North Korea. Provocation is something that must be delicately calculated before the actual action, since it can be extended to a serious conflict. Among the possible factors, this paper focuses on the leader's characteristic, because 1) under North Korean dictatorship, the leader's thoughts are critical influence to policies and 2) personal characteristic, especially if it is the dictator's, hardly changes even when the external circumstances change. The purpose of this paper is in analyzing the correlations between North Korean leader's characteristics and provocation pattern. First, three generations of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il, and Kim Jong-un's personal characteristics will be described. Next, particular provocation features in respective leader's period will follow. Lastly, how each leader's characteristic and concerns were reflected on the provocations will be analyzed.

Alterations in Acetylation of Histone H4 Lysine 8 and Trimethylation of Lysine 20 Associated with Lytic Gene Promoters during Kaposi`s Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Reactivation

( Sora Lim ),( Seho Cha ),( Jun Hyeong Jang ),( Dahye Yang ),( Joonho Choe ),( Taegun Seo ) 한국미생물 · 생명공학회 2017 Journal of microbiology and biotechnology Vol.27 No.1

Kaposi`s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is associated with formation of Kaposi`s sarcoma, multicentric Castleman`s disease, and primary effusion lymphoma. Replication and transcription activator (RTA) genes are expressed upon reactivation of KSHV, which displays a biphasic life cycle consisting of latent and lytic replication phases. RTA protein expression results in KSHV genome amplification and successive viral lytic gene expression. Transcriptional activity of viral lytic genes is regulated through epigenetic modifications. In Raji cells latently infected with Epstein-Barr virus, various modifications, such as acetylation and methylation, have been identified at specific lysine residues in histone H4 during viral reactivation, supporting the theory that expression of specific lytic genes is controlled by histone modification processes. Data obtained from chromatin immunoprecipitation and quantitative real-time PCR analyses revealed alterations in the H4K8ac and H4K20me3 levels at lytic gene promoters during reactivation. Our results indicate that H4K20me3 is associated with the maintenance of latency, while H4K8ac contributes to KSHV reactivation in infected TREx BCBL-1 RTA cells.

      • Augmented Reality for Blended Language Learning

2014 International Journal of Multimedia and Ubiquitous Vol.9 No.11

Although a lot of research is being conducted to apply augmented reality (AR) to education, there is little adequate research on how to design AR-based learning systems so that they foster deep understanding in learners. In this article, we present and exemplify a learner-centered instructional model that incorporates AR contents as a form of blended learning strategy. To this end, we divide the instructional model into lecture-type formal learning and purely self-directed form of informal learning, and go on to explain the methodology and process of designing instructional model according to each type. Through this approach, we show that the benefits of using AR extend into the realm of education, and verify that AR-based learning systems offer a potentially effective method for foreign language instruction.

      • Big Data in Literary Studies

2015 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.9 No.8

Digital paradigms became the lens from where we view the world. Now all of us pay attention to how does the digital paradigms shift affect the world around us. In turn, the ongoing introduction of new technologies and the increasing importance of computational thinking continue to reframe the debate on instructional practice, improvement and student learning in education. Literature instructors are also today being forced to think about 'how to teach', rather than 'what to teach'. Aware of the issues, this paper proposes a new instructional model using big data suitable to be used to teach literary history. Today's learners are different. They had grown up surrounded with an excess of technology and media use in everyday life. This paper provides them with opportunities to make literary studies more attractive and easier to understand. Through this, it attempts to explore theoretically educational methodology of studying literary history in order to encourage learners' meaningful participation in classroom.

Vol.18 No.1

Recently, with the advent of knowledge based society where information and knowledge make values, patents which are the representative form of intellectual property have become important, and the number of the patents follows growing trends. Thus, it needs to classify the patents depending on the technological topic of the invention appropriately in order to use a vast amount of the patent information effectively. IPC (International Patent Classification) is widely used for this situation. Researches about IPC automatic classification have been studied using data mining and machine learning algorithms to improve current IPC classification task which categorizes patent documents by hand. However, most of the previous researches have focused on applying various existing machine learning methods to the patent documents rather than considering on the characteristics of the data or the structure of patent documents. In this paper, therefore, we propose to use two structural fields, technical field and background, considered as having impacts on the patent classification, where the two field are selected by applying of the characteristics of patent documents and the role of the structural fields. We also construct multi-label classification model to reflect what a patent document could have multiple IPCs. Furthermore, we propose a method to classify patent documents at the IPC subclass level comprised of 630 categories so that we investigate the possibility of applying the IPC multi-label classification model into the real field. The effect of structural fields of patent documents are examined using 564,793 registered patents in Korea, and 87.2% precision is obtained in the case of using title, abstract, claims, technical field and background. From this sequence, we verify that the technical field and background have an important role in improving the precision of IPC multi-label classification in IPC subclass level.

Vol.42 No.3

This study examines Brazil’s middle school curriculum textbooks to understand how Korea is perceived and identifies issues related to misinformation about Korea in the Brazilian public education system. Since the 2000s, as interest in Korean culture has increased, Korea’s image has become highly influential in Brazilian society, and this makes it essential to understand how Korea is represented in Brazilian educational materials. In this regard, the study conducted a quantitative analysis of Korea in 79 history and geography textbooks published between 2014 and 2021. The references to Korea were categorized into five domains, which are politics, economics, society & culture, history, and environment & geography. As a result, the analysis revealed instances where Korea’s identity was misrepresented or historical data was inaccurately presented. Given that middle school textbooks play a pivotal role in shaping adolescents’ identities and world views, it is crucial to address and correct these inaccuracies because they have the potential to embed negative perceptions about Korea in young learners. Furthermore, by rectifying these inaccuracies in textbooks, it is possible to enhance exact awareness and understanding of Korea and foster more effective public diplomacy between the two countries.
