A Comparative Study of the Translation of Hong Lou Meng

홍루몽은 중국의 가장 유명한 경전소설 중의 하나이다. 그것은 중국 사회의 전통과 봉건의 백과사전이기도 하다. 홍루몽에는 정세, 경제, 관습, 종교 그리고 그 시대 사람들의 생활모습이 담겨져 있다. 게다가 막대한 양의 시, 對聯, 성어가 포함되어 있다. 영어와 중국어 간의 번역은 문화적, 언어적 차이 때문에 큰 어려움이 있다. 번역자는 문화적 글로벌리즘의 시각을 갖추어야 하고, 동시에 문화적 정체성의 시각에서 비판적 역할을 수행한다. 창작적인 번역자로서 연극, 시, 혹은 소설을 번역할 때 번역텍스트가 제공하는 정체성을 재 형상화하는 과정에서 목표언어에 부합되는 새로운 정체성을 부여한다. 그러므로 번역자는 문화적 언어적 공간에서 새로운 미적 가치를 창조하게 된다. 이 논문은 David Hawkes의 홍루몽의 1장을 대상으로 대화, 종교적 아이템, 시와 호칭의 형식에 관해 분석하였다. Hong Lou Meng is one of the most famous Chinese classical novels. It is an encyclopedia of the traditional feudalistic Chinese society. This novel involves political affairs, economy, customs, religious and the people’s livelihood at that time. It, furthermore, encompasses a great quantity of Chinese literature works, such as poetries, couplets and allusions. The great differences between English and Chinese cultures and languages render difficulties to translators. Translation lies at the very foundation of cultural globalization and apparently plays a critical role in the way cultural identities are represented. When the translator-as-creator translates a play, a poem, or a novel, he or she gives the text a new identity in the target language, all the while shaping the way the identity of the original text is perceived. Translators therefore contribute to the creation of a new aesthetic, cultural and linguistic space. This essay is going to comment on David Hawkes’s translation of several paragraphs in Chapter 1 of Hong Lou Meng in terms of the dialogues, religious items, the forms of address and the poetry translation.

Chinese-speaking Students in Universities: Challenges and Pedagogical Approaches

As the number of native speakers of Chinese studying overseas grows, their command of English has become an important factor in their success. However, although an extensive research literature addresses the challenges faced by beginners in learning English, relatively few studies have explored the specific issues encountered by those who have been studying English for much of their lives. This study aims to identify common issues and challenges in English language learning for Chinese ESL/EFL students in undergraduate business programs outside of China. Moreover, it explores the possible causes of these systematic issues and offers recommendations for practices that may help to mitigate their negative effects. The results of this study show that even though native speakers of Chinese have spent over a decade learning and studying English, they also face the challenges and difficulties as university-level learners. The findings are akin to the previous scholarship and literature identified in the past.
