Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB), which is caused by Acidovorax citrulli, is a serious threat to watermelon growers around the world. The present study was conducted to screen effective rhizobacterial isolates against 35 different A. citrulli isolates and determine their efficacy on BFB and growth parameters of watermelon. Two rhizobacterial isolates viz. Paenibacillus polymyxa (SN-22), Sinomonas atrocyanea (NSB-27) showed high inhibitory activity in the preliminary screening and were further evaluated for their effect on BFB and growth parameters of three different watermelon varieties under greenhouse conditions. The greenhouse experiment result revealed that SN-22 and NSB-27 significantly reduced BFB and had significant stimulatory effect on total chlorophyll content, plant height, total fresh weight and total dry weight compared to uninoculated plants across the tested three watermelon varieties. Analysis of the 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequences revealed that strains SN-22 belong to P. polymyxa and NSB-27 to S. atrocyanea with the bootstrap value of 99% and 98%, respectively. The isolates SN-22 and NSB-27 were tested for antagonistic and PGP traits. The result showed that the tested isolates produced siderophore, hydrolytic enzymes (protease and cellulose), chitinase, starch hydrolytic enzymes and they showed phosphate as well as zinc solubilizing capacity. This is the first report of P. polymyxa (SN-22) and S. atrocyanea (NSB-27) as biocontrol-plant growth promoting rhizobacteria on watermelon.
Seven Unrecorded Fungal Species from Field Soils in Korea

Seven unrecorded species in the phylum Ascomycota, Emericellopsis pallida (KNU16-167), Scedosporium aurantiacum (KNU16-190), Duddingtonia flagrans (KNU16-279), Bionectria rossmaniae (KNU16-309), Exophiala xenobiotica (KNU16-79), Pseudocercosporella fraxini (KNU16-102), and Stachybotrys sansevieriae (KNU16-141), were isolated in 2016 from field soils collected from various locations in Korea. All of the species were identified and described based on morphological characteristics and rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence data. Morphological features of these fungi were examined on potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, malt extract agar, Czapek yeast extract agar, and yeast extract sucrose agar. Full descriptions and illustrations of their morphological characteristics are provided.
Discovery of Two New Talaromyces Species from Crop Field Soil in Korea

Two new fungal species of the genus Talaromyces, Talaromyces purpurogenus and Talaromyces trachyspermus from the Trichocomaceae family, were recovered during an investigation of fungal communities in soil collected from the Gangwon-do and Jeollanam-do provinces of Korea. These two species have not been previously officially reported from Korea. In this study, detailed descriptions of internal transcribed spacer rDNA and beta-tubulin gene regions of these two fungi are presented. Morphological features of the two fungi in five agar media, potato dextrose, oatmeal, malt extract, czapek yeast extract, and yeast extract sucrose, are also reported. The species were identified on the basis of molecular and morphological analysis, and herein we present data with detailed descriptions and figures.
Aspergillus caninus (Syn: Phialosimplex caninus): a New Isolate from Field Soils in Korea

During the study of indigenous fungal communities in soil samples collected from various field soils in Sancheong, Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea in 2017, several species of Aspergillus were discovered. Aspergillus caninus (KNU17-7) was isolated, identified, and described based on the results from macro and micro morphological characteristics and molecular characterization. Morphologically, it was identified using five different growth media: potato dextrose agar, oatmeal agar, yeast extract sucrose agar, czapek yeast extract agar, and malt extract agar. For the molecular identification, sequencing of internal transcribed spacer, β-tubulin, and calmodulin genes was performed. Based on this characterization, our study isolate was identified as Aspergillus caninus. This fungal species has not been officially reported in Korea before, and we report here with its morphological and molecular phylogenetic characterization.
Westerdykella reniformis: A New Record from Field Soils in Korea

During a survey of fungal diversity in different provinces of South Korea in 2017, a new fungal isolate was discovered. This fungal isolate was identified as Westerdykella reniformis, based on its morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis, using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and 28S ribosomal DNA (28S rDNA) sequence data. To our knowledge, W. reniformis has not previously been reported in South Korea. Thus, in this study, we report a new record of a species from the Dothideomycetes class in Korea, and provide a detailed description with morphological illustrations.

In the ongoing survey of fungal diversity in Korea, two Ascomycetes species, namely Rhinocladiella similis and Toxicocladosporium irritans, were isolated in 2016. These species were identified based on the internal transcribed spacer region and morphological characteristics. This is the first report of these species in Korea, and the morphological characteristics and images of the fungi are presented.

A fungal isolate belonging to the phylum Ascomycota was isolated and identified as Talaromyces veerkampii in 2017 during a survey of fungal diversity in field soils in Korea. This fungal isolate was identified and described based on macro- and micromorphological and molecular characterization. The identification was also based on partial 18S-ITS1-5.8S-ITS2- 28S rDNA and calmodulin (CaM)-encoding gene sequencing data. Talaromyces veerkampii has not been previously reported in Korea. Thus, we report here a newly discovered species from soil in Korea along with its morphological and molecular characteristics.
Phialocephala lagerbergii: A New Record from Crop Field Soil in Korea

A unrecorded hyphomycete species of Phialocephala was isolated for the first time during the investigation of fungal community in the soil samples collected from different regions of Korea. The fungal isolate was identified as Phialocephala lagerbergii, based on the morphological characteristics and phylogenetic analysis of the ribosomal DNA sequence. In addition, cultural and micro-morphological features were described in detail.
A New Record of Pseudeurotium bakeri from Crop Field Soil in Korea

Pseudeurotium bakeri KNU14-21 isolated from crop field soil is a previously unreported fungal species in Korea. This fungal species was identified through morphological and molecular characteristics. Based on the shape and size of conidia and conidiophores as well as the internal transcribed spacer region of rDNA, the isolate was confirmed to be Pseudeurotium bakeri. This species has not been previously reported from Korea, and this is the first report of its incidence in Korea.
Sixteen New Records of Ascomycetes from Crop Field Soil in Korea

The present study reports 16 species of Ascomycota that were previously unknown in Korea, namely Acremonium cellulolyticus (KNU14-25), Acremonium zonatum (KNU14-15), Chaetomium madrasense (KNU14-9), Cladosporium silenes (KNU 14-18-1), Humicolopsis cephalosporioides (KNU15-3), Leptosphaerulina chartarum (KNU14-16), Paecilomyces marquandii (KNU14- 8), Paecilomyces tenuis (KNU14-18-2), Paraphaeosphaeria sporulosa (KNU15-2), Penicillium rubidurum (KNU14-12), Pochonia suchlasporia (KNU15-6), Sporothrix inflata (KNU15-8), Thielavia hyrcaniae (KNU15-1), Thielavia terricola (KNU14-23-1), Xylogone sphaerospora (KNU15-7), and Zopfiella longicaudata (KNU15-5). These fungal species were isolated from soil samples collected from various regions of Korea and identified based on their morphological characteristics and rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence data. Full descriptions and illustrations for each species are provided.
