        Progressive changes in detrusor function and micturition patterns with chroinc bladder ischemia

        Purpose: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) are bothersome constellation of voiding symptoms in men and women as they age. Multiple factors and comorbidities are attributed to this problem but underlying mechanisms of nonobstructive nonneurogenic detrusor overactivity, detrusor underactivity and LUTS remain largely unknown. Our goal was to characterize detrusor function and voiding patterns in relation to muscarinic receptors expression, nerve fiber density, and neural ultrastructure in chronic bladder ischemia. Materials and Methods: Iliac artery atherosclerosis and bladder ischemia were produced in male Sprague-Dawley rats. At 8 and 16 weeks after ischemia, micturition patterns and cystometrograms were recorded in conscious rats then bladder blood flow and nonvoiding spontaneous contractions were measured under general anesthesia. Bladder tissues were processed for Western blotting, immunostaining, and transmission electron microscopy. Results: Bladder responses to ischemic insult depended on the duration of ischemia. Micturition patterns and cystometric changes at 8-week ischemia suggested detrusor overactivity, while voiding behavior and cystometrograms at 16-week ischemia implied abnormal detrusor function resembling underactivity. Upregulation of muscarinic M2 receptor was found after 8- and 16 weeks of ischemia. Downregulation of M3 and upregulation of M1 were detected at 16-week ischemia. Neural structural damage and marked neurodegeneration were found after 8 and 16 weeks of ischemia, respectively. Conclusions: Prolonged ischemia may be a mediating variable in progression of overactive bladder to dysfunctional patterns similar to detrusor underactivity. The mechanism appears to involve differential expression of M1, M2, and M3 receptors, neural structural injury, and progressive loss of nerve fibers.

      • MEGAMASER DISKS REVEAL A BROAD DISTRIBUTION OF BLACK HOLE MASS IN SPIRAL GALAXIES

        <P>We use new precision measurements of black hole (BH) masses from water megamaser disks to investigate scaling relations between macroscopic galaxy properties and supermassive BH mass. The megamaser-derived BH masses span 10(6)-10(8) M-circle dot, while all the galaxy properties that we examine (including total stellar mass, central mass density, and central velocity dispersion) lie within a narrower range. Thus, no galaxy property correlates tightly with M-BH in similar to L* spiral galaxies as traced by megamaser disks. Of them all, stellar velocity dispersion provides the tightest relation, but at fixed sigma* the mean megamaser M-BH are offset by -0.6 +/- 0.1 dex relative to early-type galaxies. Spiral galaxies with non-maser dynamical BH masses do not appear to show this offset. At low mass, we do not yet know the full distribution of BH mass at fixed galaxy property; the non-maser dynamical measurements may miss the low-mass end of the BH distribution due to an inability to resolve their spheres of influence and/or megamasers may preferentially occur in lower-mass BHs.</P>

        Fungal diversity notes 253–366: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions to fungal taxa

        <P>Notes on 113 fungal taxa are compiled in this paper, including 11 new genera, 89 new species, one new subspecies, three new combinations and seven reference specimens. A wide geographic and taxonomic range of fungal taxa are detailed. In the Ascomycota the new genera Angustospora (Testudinaceae), Camporesia (Xylariaceae), Clematidis, Crassiparies (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Farasanispora, Longiostiolum (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), Multilocularia (Parabambusicolaceae), Neophaeocryptopus (Dothideaceae), Parameliola (Pleosporales genera incertae sedis), and Towyspora (Lentitheciaceae) are introduced.       • Temporal variations of black carbon in Guangzhou, China, in summer 2006

        <P>Abstract. In situ measurements of the mass concentration of black carbon (BC) and mixing ratios of carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2) were made at Guangzhou, an urban measurement site in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), China, in July 2006. The average ± standard deviation (SD) concentrations of BC, CO, and CO2 were 4.7± 2.3 μgC m−3, 798± 459 ppbv, and 400± 13 ppmv, respectively. The trends of these species were mainly controlled by synoptic-scale changes in meteorology during the campaign. Based on back trajectories, data are analyzed separately for two different air mass types representing northerly and southerly flows. The northerly air masses, which constituted ~25% of the campaign, originated mostly in the PRD and hence represent observations on regional scales. On the other hand, during southerly flow (~75%), the measurements were influenced by dilution due to cleaner marine air. The diurnal patterns of BC, CO, and CO2 exhibited peak concentrations during the morning and evening hours coinciding with rush-hour traffic. The ratios of OC/BC were lower during the morning hour peaks in the concentrations of primary pollutants due to their fresh emissions mainly from vehicular traffic in Guangzhou. The diurnal variations of BC observed in southerly air masses tended to follow the traffic patterns of heavy-duty vehicles (HDV) in Guangzhou, while the roles of other sources need to be investigated. The slopes of ΔBC/ΔCO, ΔBC/ΔCO2, and ΔCO/ΔCO2 observed during northerly flows were 0.0045 μgC m−3/ppbv, 0.13 μgC m−3/ppmv, and 49.4 ppbv/ppmv, respectively, agreeing reasonably with their respective emission ratios derived from regional emission inventories. </P>

        Statistical analysis of the size- and rate-dependence of yield and plastic flow in nanocrystalline copper pillars

        <P>The effects of specimen size and strain rate on the plastic deformation response of sub-mu m-sized nanocrystalline Cu pillars were examined through a series of micro-compression experiments, with particular emphasis on the stochastic nature of the measured responses. A large number of micropillars two different diameters, both with an average grain size of 6 nm, were prepared by employing the single batch process of e-beam lithography and electroplating and tested. By recourse to statistical analysis, it was recognized the yield strength and flow stress increase with pillar size and strain rate. Further, the rate sensitivity in smaller pillars was more pronounced, implying synergetic interactions between the deformed volume and the strain rate imposed. The coupling influence of size and rate on yield was analyzed by estimating the parameters in a statistical distribution having Weibull-like formula, revealing that the enhanced role of free surface in smaller pillar may make it easy to trigger yielding. The size dependence of rate-sensitive plastic flow was also statistically examined in detail and discussed in terms of strain-rate sensitivity, activation volume, and the combined roles of free surfaces and grain boundaries. The minimum k for which G is not uniquely k-list colorable is called the m-number of G. In this paper, we study the uniquely 3-list colorable graphs.

        Room Temperature in Situ Growth of B/BO<sub><i>x</i></sub> Nanowires and BO<sub><i>x</i></sub> Nanotubes

        <P>Despite significant advances in the synthesis of nanostructures, our understanding of the growth mechanisms of nanowires and nanotubes grown from catalyst particles remains limited. In this study we demonstrate a straightforward route to grow coaxial amorphous B/BO<SUB><I>x</I></SUB> nanowires and BO<SUB><I>x</I></SUB> nanotubes using gold catalyst particles inside a transmission electron microscope at room temperature without the need of any specialized or expensive accessories. Exceedingly high growth rates (over 7 μm/min) are found for the coaxial nanowires, and this is attributed to the highly efficient diffusion of B species along the surface of a nanowire by electrostatic repulsion. On the other hand the O species are shown to be relevant to activate the gold catalysts, and this can occur through volatile O species.       • Discovery of LW6 as a new potent inhibitor of breast cancer resistance protein

        <P>Purpose The present study aimed to discover a new potent BCRP inhibitor overcoming multidrug resistance. Methods Effects of LW6 on the functional activity and gene expression of two major efflux transporters, BCRP and P-gp, were evaluated by using MDCKII cells overexpressing each transporter (MDCKII-BCRP and MDCKII-MDR1). Its effects on the cytotoxicity and pharmacokinetics of co-administered anticancer drugs were also evaluated in transfected cells and rats, respectively. Results In MDCKII-BCRP cells overexpressing BCRP, LW6 enhanced significantly (p < 0.05) the cellular accumulation of mitoxantrone, a BCRP substrate, and was more potent than Ko143, a well-known BCRP inhibitor. LW6 also down-regulated BCRP expression at concentrations of 0.1-10 mu M. Furthermore, cells became more susceptible to the cytotoxicity of anticancer drugs in the presence of LW6. The CC50 values of mitoxantrone and doxorubicin were reduced by three-and tenfold, respectively, in MDCKII-BCRP cells, while LW6 did not affect the cytotoxicity of anticancer drugs in MDCKII-mock cells lacking BCRP transporter. Furthermore, LW6 improved the oral exposure of methotrexate by twofold in rats. In contrast to BCRP, LW6 had no inhibition effect on the functional activity and gene expression of P-gp. Conclusion LW6 was newly identified as a potent BCRP inhibitor and could be useful to reduce the multidrug resistance of cancer cells via the inhibition of BCRP-mediated drug efflux as well as the down-regulation of BCRP expression.</P>

      • Dependence of the properties of hydrothermally grown ZnO on precursor concentration

        This study evaluated the effects of precursor concentration ranging from 0.06 to 1.5M on the properties of hydrothermally grown ZnO on annealed ZnO buffered Si substrates. At relatively low concentrations (no more than 0.5M), well-aligned ZnO arrays were grown on ZnO/Si(100) due to heterogeneous nucleation. As the concentration was increased to 1.0M, the morphologies changed to randomly accumulated particles as a result of homogeneous nucleation. The crystal and optical properties of the materials were investigated by X-ray diffractometer (XRD) and photoluminescence (PL) measurement, respectively. It was found that the best crystal and optical properties were obtained with concentrations of 0.5 and 0.3M, respectively. These properties were observed to degrade when the concentration was raised to more than 1.0M.
