      • Home Economics Education : Original Article ; An Exploration of Families Use of Information and Communications Technology: The Case of Korea and the United States

        ( John T. Brady ),( Bo Han Lee ),( Jong-youn Rha ) 대한가정학회 2015 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.16 No.2

As information and communications technology (ICT) becomes increasingly integrated into the daily lives of people around the world, it is important to know how the technology is influencing the behaviors of individuals and families. This study looked at the ecology of families as it is related to ICT and the changes to processes that occur as ICT devices and services are integrated into the family. A survey of 1084 families was conducted. Five hundred of the families were from the United States and 584 families were from Korea. Significant differences were found in the use of ICT by Korean and American families although the source of this difference was not clearly identified in this study. Three clusters of families were identified based on their use of devices and services. These were labeled as; ‘The Tech Savvy’, ‘The Wireless Users’, ‘The In-betweeners’, ‘The Wired’, and ‘The Just Mobile’. ‘The Tech Savvy’ used the greatest variety of ICT technologies and ‘The Wired’ used the fewest. Other clusters fell in the middle with families seemingly using the devices which met their particular needs. Two factors related to ICT integration into the family were identified. These were related to family intimacy and family relationship maintenance. The family cluster identified as ‘Tech Savvy’ made significantly greater use of ICT in these relationships and ‘The Wired’ made the least use of ICT in these areas. The other clusters tended to be between the two ends and tended not to be significantly different from each other in their use of ICT. Finally, models for ICT use by families showed that demographics, nation of origin, types of devices and services used, and attitude and interest in ICT all had a significant impact.

      • School Funding and the Aging Population

John T. Brady 한국FP학회 2013 Financial Planning Review Vol.6 No.1

The research examining the relationship between an aging population and education funding has treated the elderly as a homogeneous group motivated by narrow self interests. Previous research has tended to start with the premise that the elderly will sacrifice public education to promote public projects that will benefit them. This project proposes that there is an additional motivation for elderly citizens, a desire to see their genetic material pass successfully into the future also known as ‘the selfish gene theory.’ By comparing the levels of spending for public education in those areas with a large age-inplace population or a large elderly in-migration population, researchers and policy makers can begin to see the different motivations at work. Locations showing characteristics of an influx of elderly tended to fund primary and secondary schools at a lower level and use less local revenue to fund education than counties in general. Locations with characteristics of a large aging-in-place population tended to have higher levels of funding for primary and secondary schools and generate more revenue from local sources. Additional variables which were also significant predictors of education spending included; income, percentage of the population under 18, percentage of the population 65 and over, race, and percentage of owner occupied housing for the dependent variable of spending per student. The percentage of the population under 18, percentage of the population 65 and over, percentage of the population in poverty, the percentage of college graduates in the population, and the percentage of housing owner occupied for the dependent variable of the percentage of education revenue from local sources.

Consumer Affinity for Foreign Countries, Film Attendance, and Interest in Purchasing Products from Foreign Countries: An Exploratory Study of Korea and Ireland

( John Brady ),( Daekyun Ko ) 대한가정학회 2016 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.17 No.1

A number of studies in recent years of have begun to look at the connection between country affinity (an interest in and admiration of a particular country) and a desire to buy the products and services of that country. Country affinity has been shown to be particularly important when consumers lack other sources of information about a good or service. However, except for direct questioning, methods to identify the affinity consumers might have for another country are lacking. This study examines the degree to which attending a movie set in a particular country will be related to an affinity for that country and possibly by extension the goods and services of that country. It is not the goal of this study to suggest that movies create the affinity, but rather that that the affinity will exist for viewers of the films. Two films set in Ireland and featuring Irish actors where shown to audiences composed of Korean students and a small number of Korean adults. As a point of comparison, students in two introductory consumer classes were also asked to complete a similar questionnaire. Four affinity factors were identified from a list of 17 items. Those who attended the historical drama showed a greater affinity for Ireland than those who attended the romantic musical. Affinity for Ireland among Koreans was also meaningful in predicting interest in purchasing Irish products.

A Phenomenological Study on the Information Technology Acceptance of the Korean Baby Boomer Generation

김소현,John Thomas Brady 국제문화기술진흥원 2019 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.7 No.4

As ICT technology develops rapidly and social and consumer interactions require more knowledge of the technology, the interest for baby boomers’ ICT technology acceptance is increasing as they age. However, previous studies have limitations as they lack a systematic and in-depth understanding of this phenomenon in which the emerging elderly population embraces emerging technology. To overcome this limitation, this study carried out a phenomenological study on baby boomers’ ICT technology acceptance. In addition, since existing studies have just simply listed variables or proved the relationship between a few variables, this study aimed to find the relationship between variables by analyzing the data obtained through semi-structured interviews. Through this procedure, it was aimed to construct conceptual model which illustrates the relationships between variables so that understanding the phenomenon of baby boomers’ acceptance of ICT technology with a holistic view could be possible. The ten variables suggested by Lee & Coughlin (2015) that cover multiple sides of baby boomers’ technology acceptance were used. As a result, the analysis revealed that there is a sequential relationship between these variables and different agents can be related to each variable in sequence. Also, from an ecological perspective, baby boomers and their surroundings were analyzed to find agents involved in this phenomenon.
