This study tries to describe "The Rainbow of Desire", a dramatherapy method of Augusto Boal, with the practical work and to analyze what therapeutic effects it has with the critical mind that we need to have a practical extension of debate on dramatherapy. For this it has been chosen as a study method that the therapeutic characteristics of "The Rainbow of Desire" be taken and the therapeutic effects from the course of workshop be analyzed.
The results analyzed from this study are as follows ;
First, "The Rainbow of Desire" has been found to be a comprehensive and concentrative therapeutic method in terms of structural aspect, which combines the advantages of dramatherapy as a group therapy, and psychodrama as a personal therapy. It is given possibility by the flexible structure of "The Rainbow of Desire", which follows the dramatherapy structure of making use of all the categories of dramatic activities at the stage of warm-up, and takes the similar structure to psychodrama that penetrate concentratively the patient's inner world with specific techniques of roles and extemporization at the stage of technique.
Second, "The Rainbow of Desire" acquires physical attribute and symbolism, which perform-dependent natural representation can't take, by showing the actor's psychological reality with images. And the course of dynamization which objectifies the actor's reality offers multiple viewpoints connecting present and future by allowing chances of various choices and extension of meaning, on the contrary of retroactive and reductive tendency of psychodrama.
Third, not like the psychodrama producer characterized by charismatic leadership and directive involvement, the producer of "The Rainbow of Desire" stays back as a promoter. Instead the actor and spect-actors become subjects who lead the course of therapy.
In short, "The Rainbow of Desire" is the dynamic and diversified therapy with which participants transfer from objects to subjects in situations by exploring and expressing their inside through various dramatic activities, and by forming and dynamizing the inside oppression with images. Therefore "The Rainbow of Desire" could be the very proper dramatherapy method to the public who would restore the self originality as independent human-beings, choosing their own lives and having responsibilities on them rather than depend on someone's authority and directive involvement.
Meanwhile the results from making inspection of the therapeutic effects of "The Rainbow of Desire" through the workshop examples are as follows;
First, in the analysis of therapeutic factors both the public high school student group and the executional institution student group indicate in common the group cohesiveness, family reenactment, and existential factors as the factors having great therapeutic effects. And the recognitional therapeutic factors like interpersonal learning-input and self understanding showed relative superiority in public high school student group, while the interpersonal learning-output factor appeared conspicuous in the executional institution student group.
Second, in comparison with the study and analysis of the therapeutic factors of psychodrama, "The Rainbow of Desire" shares existential factors, family reenactment and self understanding as precedent factors with psychodrama, but each takes group cohesiveness and interpersonal learning-input as a relative advantage and defect respectively.
Third, it was assured through the response of participants that "The Rainbow of Desire" takes the drama therapeutic characteristics -the extension of dramatic originality and the power of expression-on its foundation besides 12 therapeutic factors of Yalom .
Finally, in the analysis of personal examples focused on the public high school student group, the therapeutic changes were observed such as positiveness, openness, understanding family, group intimacy, improvement of concentration, finding the multiformity of self, objective recognition about self, promotion of emotion-involvement power and improvement of self-esteem, etc.
Totally, during the workshop of "The Rainbow of Desire", experimental groups changed into being more creative in terms of drama, came to know more about and trust each other, found their diverse figures by emitting their buried emotion inside, and they could extend the insight to the understanding and accepting their family. In addition, all these changes seemed to be concluded to be existential understanding about life.
Seen so far, it can be said that "The Rainbow of Desire" proved to have abundant possibilities as a dramatherapy also at the aspect of practical therapeutic effects.
