This study was conducted to examine participant roles in peer bullying among grade school children. In addition, differences in children''s cognitive and emotional understanding according to their roles in peer bullying were examined.Subjects of this study were 180 children selected from 746 5th-graders in three grade schools in Seoul. The participant roles in peer bullying were assessed using the ''Participant Role Questionnaire''(Salmivalli & Voeten, 2004); and children''s social understandings were measured using the ''Social Understanding Story Tasks''(Bosacki, 1998). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and one-way ANOVAs.The results of this study were as follows.First, roles children participated in peer bullying were in order of ''the outsiders'', ''the defenders'', ''the assistants'', ''the reinforcers'', ''the bullies'', and ''the victims''.Second, ''the defenders'' were higher in cognitive understanding than ''the victims'' .Third, ''the defenders'' were higher in emotional understanding than ''the bullies'' .In conclusion, children took the roles of ''the outsiders'' and ''the defenders'' more frequently in peer bullying. There were differences in children''s cognitive and emotional understanding according to their roles in peer bullying; ''the defenders'' showed high scores in both cognitive and emotional understanding while ''the victims'' scored low in cognitive understanding and ''the bullies'' scored low in emotional understanding.
