This thesis aims to examine the relationships between principal's moral leadership and teachers' maturity level in elementary schools.
By conducting a questionnaire survey, we investigate whether there is any meaningful difference in the recognition of the principal's moral leadership by teachers in elementary schools, depending on their individual variables (such as gender, years of teaching experience, and position, etc) and on their school's background variables (school size and years of service of the principal, etc). We also investigate whether there is any meaningful difference in the level of maturity among these teachers, depending on the above variables. Based on the results of this survey study, a critical discussion is made as to what kind of relationship we can detect between the principal's moral leadership and teachers' maturity level.
The survey study was conducted by distributing two forms of questionnaire (one for the study of principal's moral leadership and the other for that of teachers' maturity level) to a total of 600 teachers in a group of elementary schools (20 teachers each in 12 mid-size schools and 30 teachers each in 12 large-size schools) located in Seoul school district.
The conclusions of this thesis are as follows:
First, in general, the principals have a high level of moral leadership. In particular, they have a very strong sense of responsibility and serve their duty in a fair manner and with reasonable attitude. However, it turns out that there is room for improvement in their ability to present a vision for the teachers.
Secondly, the teachers tend to have a relatively high level of maturity in most of the categories and do their job with a sense of professionalism as well as with passion. It is notable that their maturity level is highest in the category of 'sense of responsibility' but relatively low in the category of 'creativity' compared to other categories.
Third, the teachers in the school whose principal has a high standard of moral leadership are more capable and bring stronger passion at their work than those in the school whose principal has a relatively low standard of moral leadership.
