The late period of modern times, Manhae, Han Young-Un, wrote some Chinese poems and one of the most famous modern poems in Korean literature, Love Silence(님의 침묵), and he also had a great influence on the Korean independence movement under the Japanese annexation of Korea. There have been a lot of studies about his Korean poems but the studies of his Chinese poems are not sufficient. In this thesis, I try to explore his Chinese poems which has the main idea of the resistance and I look into the correlation between his Korean poems and Chinese poems. Especially I review the resistant characteristic of his Chinese poems. The characteristics of Manhae's works are as follows. 1. In the aspect of the main subject, his works relate the loneliness and the yearning for his fatherland. He expressed not only the sadness of losing his homeland but also the desire of restoring it. 2. Generally, his Chinese poems have symbolic meanings. Through his Chinese poems, we can find out the resistance spirit which came from the natural materials like 'ume flower'(매화), 'chrysanthemum'(국화), 'lotus'(연꽃), 'bamboo tree'(대나무) and 'pine tree'(소나무).
Other materials which show in his works are mainly the seasonal and historical things such as the winter which symbolize the hardship of life and the patriots' spirit which is devoted and sublime.
Some comparisons between his Korean poems and resistant Chinese poems are as follows.
His Korean poem, Love Silence, is the literature of the lover. Manhae reveals his complicated feelings with the concept of lover. The main idea which streams on his poems is coherently the spirit of patriotism and resistance against Japanese domination. The expressions in his Korean poems and Chinese poems have diverse characteristics.
The first characteristic of his expressions is about the correlation of the main subjects. In his works his main idea is based on the feeling of the loss of his homeland.
Secondly, he wrote some poems about some patriotic forefathers. Especially Nongae and Gaewolhyang are the Korean historical heroines to risk their lives for their country. Using these characters, Manhae shows the national consciousness and the spirit of practice.
Thirdly, in the aspect of vocabulary, he used the feminal words and almost narraters in his Korean poems are women because he have to evade the censorship of the Japanese government. He also uses a lot of negative words and those symbolize the darkness of a period. Regarding these things, his Korean poems is closely related to his Chinese poems especially in spiritual aspect.
The significance of Manhe's Chinese poems is summarized as follows.
Firstly, he reveals his will to realize the independence of his fatherland through his Chinese poems. He uses various subjects and materials in his poems which converge on one point called the desire of the independence of his homeland.
The second characteristic of his Chinese poems is related to the Korean literature, that is to say, it takes an important role in the Korean literature. He wrote his poems more focusing on the contents and meanings than the formality. His famous Korean poem, Love silence(님의 침묵), could be created on the basis of these characteristics.
Until now, I tried to find out the characteristics of Manhae's Chinese poems which show his spirit of resistance and the correlation between his Chinese poems and Korean poems. Consequently, I discover the fact that Manhae's Chinese poems effect his Korean poems and we can easily understand this by grasping his love of his homeland and the nation.
Lastly, preparing this thesis, I feel sorry that the existing studies of Manhae's Korean and Chinese poems need to be more corroborated. I really hope that the next studies of Manhae's poems are more thorough and accurate than this.
