Though the learning of fractions concept, which is one of the most complicated and important concepts that is being taught in elementary schools, has been spent a lot of time and efforts, the achievement is very low. One of the reasons is that students don't understand the concept properly and are forced to form procedural knowledge and algorithm. The purpose of the thesis is to find out effective teaching methods of fractions concept through the analysis of misconcepts of fractions.
The test I used to analyze how students understand the fraction concept and find misconcepts of fractions students have was made from pre-tests taken 2 or 3 times. Two or three students who showed consistent misconcepts were interviewed and observed to indentify the misconcepts and their causes.
The results are as follows.
First, I found that students think that fractions concept is very difficult in itself. For the concept is not inherent in their network of knowledge, they don't show consistent responses in different problems with the same structure.
Second, students shows a wider variety of misconcept in interview and observation rather than in the objective questions through the test.
Third, the results are divided into several misconcept; misconcept about confusion of whole and part, about the equivalent, about the interrelation between denominators and numerators, from mistaking the whole into 1, from fractionlizing the rest of the measure, about the relation between numerators with the same denominators and unit fractions, about the relation between 1 and unit fractions. According to the result of test papers, the most frequently shown fraction misconcept are two cases; misconcept about the proportion of partial number in the whole number(for example, what part of 20 is 8 ?) and misconcept from mistaking the whole into 1.
Fourth, the causes of those misconcepts of fractions concept are found to be able to be explained through the learning theories and teaching methods of math. Students form false concepts from the types of limited fraction questions in their textbooks. So the can't understand each meaning of fractions, and only recognize each meaning separately, instead of forming incorporated concepts of fractions. And from the textbook where the algorithm is more highlighted than the concepts, to compare two fractions, they only get the equivalent fraction numbers and compare without the thinking massiveness or the sense of fractions.
Fith, students are more likely to have difficulty thinking about fractions in the case of discrete quantity than continuous quantity.
Sixth, as a result, there are several important current issues. Revised textbooks and students' various, practical, and meaningful activities is needed to enhance students' understanding the fractions concepts and the treatment is also needed to form the misconcepts to right concepts.
