The purposes of this study was to investigate the effect of storybook reading on development of young children's mathematical concept.
The following research questions were established;
1. What is the effect on development of age related young cheldren's mathematical concept through Storybook-Based Mathematical Activities?
2. What is the effect on development of age related young cheldren's categorizing ability through Storybook-Based Mathematical Activities?
3. What is the effect on development of age related young cheldren's numbering ability through Storybook-Based Mathematical Activities?
4. What is the effect on development of age related young cheldren's spatial concept through Storybook-Based Mathematical Activities?
5. What is the effect on development of age related young cheldren's measuremant concept through Storybook-Based Mathematical Activities?
To achieve this purpose, 60 children aged two and three years old were randomly selected at A nursery which was located in Anyang city, kyunggi province, Korea. The first testing group was 30 children of two year-old. 15 of them were assigned to the experimental group and the other 15 to the control group. The second testing group was 30 children of three year-old. 15 of them were assigned to the experimental group and the other 15 to the control group.
The mathematical concept test used in the works of Hee-dal Jung(1990) and Young-Hee Yeo(1995) and used in the piagetian test designed by Barron(1979). Nine books relevant to categorizing, numbering, spacing, and measuring were selected among Storybooks-based Mathematical Activities.
The data were analyzed with ANOVA to detect effect of storybook-based mathematical activities on development of age related chaildren's mathematical concept by differential scores of the average of pre-and post-test between two groups. The research findings were as follows;
1. Storybook-based mathematical activities had a positive effect on young children's development of mathematical concept.
2. In detal, storybook-based mathematical activities had a positve effect on development of categorizing, numbering, spatial, measurement concept but not on three year-old children's categorizing concept.
3. In detal, storybook-based mathematical activities had a more positve effect on two year-old children's categorizing concept than three yeat-old children's categorizing concept.
