Through France's Civil Revolution (1789-1794) and England's Industrial Revolution, art which had been segregated from the public since the beginning of private art museum in the 17th century came to be made available to the public. Art, which had been open only to the royal family, priests and the noble class was supplied to the public because of democracy (Civil Revolution) and the application of art to industrial products (Industrial Revolution). This resulted in the increase of the general public's interest in art.
These historic events created a turning point in the history of art museum. The private art museums as "a storage type of museum" for the upper class began to be changed into the art museums for the public. The public characteristics of the art museum had to play a social role to the public and have been an art of social education that lasts into the present day. With consequences of Civil Revolution and Industrial. Revolution, a generalized thought and standardized life style held by a large number of people have become a foundation for uniformity, regularity, and generality, characterizing universalism of Europe since the 18th century. These characteristics of society have also come to influence a construction of art museums.
In a universalized society, as art museums pursue popularity, they have converted from conventional, treasure warehouse to history books. Exhibits have turned into objective knowledge in the space of art museums, and a role of social education by art museums could be played through a medium of exhibits. This means that exhibition programs of art museums by curators can directly influence social education.
When a universalized society, which had lasted until 1980s, has changed to a pluralized society in 1990 as severalty, individuality, and peculiarity are valued. This has brought a great change to an overall flow of social culture, and also led to a change in the curatorship of art museums. In a pluralistic society, it has become more common that visitors themselves, rather than curators, extract various information from exhibits. In other words, instead of delivering a uniform meaning based on an artist's original intention or a curator's general extraction of information, the space of art museums has been redefined, and art museums have been reinterpreted in relation with the public and society. In this process, various meanings have been regenerated.
Thus, the purpose this study is to make a comparative analysis of the configuration and arrangement of exhibits, as a means of delivering knowledge in art museums, from an educational perspective of art museums which has changed the meaning of the building of art museums: from Universalism, which began in the 18th century, to Pluralism that is emerging in recent years. For this research, eight representative art museums were selected from 40 art museums in Europe from previous studies according to the configuration of the exhibition space and time periods; exhibition programs and visitors´ traffic line trace were analyzed from this selection of museums.
From the analysis of exhibition programs, it was found that the contents of exhibition and the delivering methods of public art museums have changed since 1990. In general, the theme of exhibition has changed from a chronological arrangement format according to an exhibition classification method by theme, country, and art to an artist arrangement format; this implies that art museums are providing various viewing opportunities for visitors by inducing them to feel and interpret exhibits directly, not by injecting curators´ or museums´ intentions in delivering the contents of exhibition. Additionally, the configuration of each exhibition hall is changing from a sequential arrangement to a consolidated arrangement. These changes suggest a possibility of various exhibition viewing behaviors.
Since 1990, several exhibition spaces have been constructed for planned exhibitions, and some art museums use all exhibition spaces for planned exhibitions. From this trend, it can be predicted that the contents of information delivered to visitors will change as the contents of planned exhibitions change; exhibition viewing behaviors will change as arrangements of exhibits change.
In arranging exhibits, undefined spatial partitions used in recent years deliver unclear messages of exhibits by making the information of each exhibit area ambiguous. Accordingly, this can provide an opportunity for visitors to interpret the characteristics of each exhibit differently, and it also means a possibility of various exhibition viewing behaviors. This possibility can be expected as the characteristics of exhibits change from ancient art to modem art and also as the types of exhibits vary. For example, as various installation methods, images, and photo art of past paintings and sculptures are available, new techniques of installation or arrangement have been introduced, and this variety can affect viewing behaviors.
Visitors' traffic line trace was investigated to find out how the changes in exhibition programs and the possibility of various exhibition viewing behaviors are related to actual visitors' viewing behaviors. The results of this investigation showed that there is a high correlation between the arrangement type and the arrangement configuration of exhibition; in the case of museums using a chronological arrangement format, a flow of the whole viewing traffic line was formed in one direction sequentially; whereas in the case of museums using an artist arrangement format, a flow of viewing traffic line was found to be complex and various. Additionally, to understand the results of visitors' traffic line trace more systematically, a quantitative analytical method was used. From this analysis, a table of visitors' viewing behaviors of exhibits was constructed to show exhibition viewing patterns. By using visitors' viewing rates of exhibits, standard deviations of visitors' viewing rates, and standard deviations of exhibits' viewed rates, a correlation with exhibition viewing behaviors was found.
Exhibition viewing patterns visualize a quantitative analysis of an investigation of visitors' traffic line trace and show how similar the viewing patterns of exhibits are. Since 1990, the exhibition viewing patterns of art museums have shown to be increasingly varied; accordingly, various experiences of viewing exhibits are formed. This trend can also be found from exhibition rates; since 1990, 80% of high viewing rate has been decreased to 50-60%, and the standard deviations of visitors' viewing rates and exhibits' viewed rates have been widened. In other words, most exhibits were viewed by visitors, and a viewing degree of visitors was almost uniform; as viewing behaviors are varied, only part of exhibits are viewed by visitors, and the deviation of a viewing degree of visitors is considerably getting big.
From these analyses, the following conclusions can be made:
    1. In arranging exhibition programs, since 1990, a conventional, structured arrangement method (a chronological arrangement method or a close arrangement of the same program) has changed to a scattered arrangement method (an artist arrangement method or a scattered arrangement of the same program by installing them on different floors). Additionally, after 1990, an increase in the planned exhibitions is changing the contents of information delivered to museum visitors, and the change in the arrangement of exhibits influences exhibition viewing behaviors, and it leads to pluralism.
    2. The changes in the configuration of exhibits, such as changes in the arrangement and characteristics of exhibits, mean changes from a typical exhibition space to an atypical exhibition space; that is, changes from a general form of exhibition space to a pluralistic form of exhibition space. In the former case, an exhibition space, which used to be considered as a background of exhibits, has changed to be an active part of exhibition since 1990. In the latter case, a general construction method of museums, first-construction-after-exhibition, has changed to emphasizing a construction plan to accommodate various exhibition programs.
    3. These changes of exhibition programs have led to the changes of visitors' viewing behaviors. A uniform viewing traffic line has been changed to various viewing traffic lines. In the case of a building structure of intellectual center, such as art museums, traffic lines can be assumed to be a system of delivering knowledge. From this point of view, it can be said that a uniform system of delivering knowledge has changed to a pluralistic system of delivering knowledge.
In conclusion, since the 18th century until 1980s, art museums were constructed to provide uniform exhibition programs and similar exhibition experiences; however, after 1990, recent art museums are found to provide non-uniform, selective exhibition programs as well as various exhibition experiences. Over different time periods, these differences in social education are found to be closely related to a social image of each time period. Between the 18th century to 1980s, a completion of a modern society by Civil Revolution and Industrial Revolution had led to a general social education of art museums under an influence of general social perspective. However, individuality has been ignored under this general view of value, but has been recovered by the recent pluralistic social view, and in turn it led to the contents of pluralistic social education of art museums.
