As the population of working mother increased in recent years, it is anticipated to see the problems that have been kept silent have begun to emerge.
Among them, the problem of maternal guilt of working mothers is one of the concerning problems because it influences on their children's personality development which traditionally has been a typical area of social work intervention.
The purpose of this study was to developed the maternity training program for reducing the maternal guilt of working mothers and to prove its effectiveness so that the program would alleviate their maternal guilt and psychological uneasiness to improve the healthy development of their children's personality.
This study includes inquires: One is on the relations between the maternal guilt and the child-rearing attitude and the psychological traits of child.
The other is on the effectiveness of the program was to reduce the maternal guilt of the working mother, to improve the child-rearing attitude, and the psychological traits of child.
403 working mothers rearing under 7 year child, who use day care center more than 20 hours per a week in Daegu and Kyungpuk area were asked o fill the questionnaire to be measured the maternal guilt, the child-rearing attitude and the psychological traits of the child.
The data was analyzed to develop the model that tells the influences of maternal guilt to the child-rearing attitude and the psychological traits of the child, and the child rearing-attitude do the psychological traits of the child.
And the proposed model was proven by the results significantly.
To develop a program based on this model, data were collected form 346 working mothers through the need survey for the program, and the 8 session program was instituted to the 30 working mothers of the 3 experimental groups and the same for the controlled groups respectively.
The effectiveness of the program was proved by the results that indicated the significant differences between the controlled group and the experimental groups in the maternal guilt, the child-rearing attitude and the psychological traits of the child.
The results also indicated the favored responses by the working mothers of the experimental group.
For an application of the program to the field of social welfare practice, some recommendations could be made.
First of all, the program leader should have possessed the favored attributes measured by the need survey.
The attributes include female older than 35 years, marred, and has expertise in parent education, which facilitates to establish rapid rapport between group members and leader.
Thus, it is highly recommended that social worker working with working mothers have some qualifications in parent education of he/she wishes to run such program.
Secondly, the homogeneity of group members should be considered carefully to facilitate a formation of rapport and interactions between group members.
Thirdly, because of difficulties in obtaining sufficient time to participate the program, it seems important to attain the employer's approval of the program as a employee assistance program(EPA).
Fourthly, according to the participant's evaluation, it seems helpful to set up one or two special session for participant who attends with her husband in order to enhance the effectiveness of the program since his cooperation in domestic affairs and his understanding of wife's working are important to her role performance in her family.
Lastly, as 8 session program seems insufficient to reduce the maternal guilt to the significant level, additional sessions involving positive perceptions about separation results and mothering skills that responds to child's separation anxiety would be needed.
