This study intends to examine the life of Nohin (1566 - 1622) to see how the local scholars and gentry perceived and reacted to the bad social situation of and wars of the 16th century. In Chosun Dynasty of the day, a political and social order was in good condition, Confucian ideas were expanded and government by native gentry was settled. And local scholars tried to enter the political world to realize their political ideas and reinforced the base of support from the local gentry.
Under the reigns of king Myongjong and Seonjo, Confucian scholars of Honam Province had strong power of government and under their influence, Nohin confirmed his base of growth. He was a pupil of Jong Gae-jung and had an academic exchange with Im Uk-ryong and Go Kyong-myong. He passed a national examination to be a local minister when he was twenty-years old.
He joined the royal army during Imjinwaeran Battle at Haengju Fortress and performed a meritorious deed to protect Honam. He thought that as military power of the day was restored during Imjinwaeran, the power provided a base of royal army. Also he thought that governmental and royal armies defeated Japanese enemies, which withdrew from the occupied area. During Jungyujaeran, the enemy took the fortress and he was captured to be a prisoner. He escaped from Japan and run away to China. There he was approved to go back to his country by Chinese king.
While he was a prisoner in Japan, he observed and recorded Japanese topography, culture, specialities and machines in Ganyangrok, Guwaesurok and Waesokrok to identify Japanese situation of affairs. His observation of foreign culture and situation means that he revealed a liberal and progressive aspect of Confucianism to see accurately and properly the situation of foreign countries.
When he stayed in China, he traveled several areas of China and recorded what he felt and what he saw in Geumkye Journal. It provided important information for the day when communication from foreign countries was blocked. He confirmed a famous military strategy devised by Chuk Gye-gang to protect the country against the Japanese invasion. He recorded farming techniques and cultural aspects such as tax, education and ceremonies in detail. The record contributed to establishing military tactics to protect against Japanese invasions.
Notably he informed of Japanese situation to Chinese king to suggest a revenge to Japanese invasion. King understood his revengeful mind for his country and approved his returing home. After he came back home, he suggested a revenge to king Seonjo. His revengeful mind was confirmed and affected by information obtained through observation.
He became a officer under the command of Lee Gyong-jun and performed a meritorious deed during the battle of Dangpo, which was the greatest battle since Imjinwaeran.
He was a chief royal army and had several battles with Japanese soldiers. He became a prisoner and then came back home via China after much suffering. During travelling, he observed and recorded cultural and political situations of the East Asia. His record contributed to identifying foreign situations and making military strategy. Finally his record brought out a victory. He practiced his ideas through actions beyond the limit of Confucianism.
