In the study, the research subjects are 157 elderly people who participates in elderly education program of an elderly welfare center in Dae-gu and the relationship between elderly education and their life satisfaction are surveyed. The goal of this study is to encourage elderly education by emphasizing the necessity of elderly education.
General characteristics and participation of students of elderly education program were analyzed through frequency analysis. And the relationship between satisfaction for educational program and life satisfaction were analyzed through T-test, one-way ANOVA analysis and correlation analysis.
The survey results are as follows.
First, the female elderly showed more general characteristics than the male elderly and the elderly in their 60's were most. The rate of elementary school graduates were highest, rate of the elderly with their spouse were higher than that of the elderly without their spouse. People in a healthy condition were more than people in an unhealthy condition and their living standard was mostly at a common level.
Second, in their participation conditions, people participating over 5 times a week were most and in participation period, people participating over 1 year and under 2 years were most. In their participation motives, most of them participated in the program to learn something and next they were encouraged by their friend. They were usually interested in health care.
Third, in terms of program satisfaction according to general characteristics and participation, they showed a significant difference according to sex, age, educational level, participation period and participation motive. However, they didn't show a significant difference in terms of marital status, health condition, participation period, the number of participation and their common interest.
Fourth, in terms of general characteristics, participation, satisfaction with participation, sex, age, educational level, marital status, living level, the number of participation, participation period and their common interest, they didn't show a significant difference but they showed a significant difference in their health condition.
Fifth, in terms of life satisfaction with the educational contents, they showed a significant difference according to their health, the area of health, or hobby activities, culture and current events.
Sixth, in terms of the relationship between satisfaction with program and living satisfaction, they showed relatively high correlation.
As result of it, it was verified that there was a meaningful relation between satisfaction with elderly education program and their living satisfaction.
On the basis of this survey, a plan to encourage elderly education can be suggested. Furthermore, we need to recognize that elderly education is necessary for the elderly for coping with changing society and living a happy life and in a level of nation, finance for the elderly welfare should be expanded and the opportunity of life-long education should be given. The current educational programs of institutes related to elderly education should have changed to satisfy their needs.
Finally, here are some suggestions that a plan to diversify educational program and to encourage participation in the elderly welfare centers should be studied constantly.
