A social change in the course of industrialization and urbanization came to cause an increase in the older population and accordingly their various problems showed up. Aging pointed out as one of the problems became having an mental, social, and physical effect on each of them.
This study is for the understanding of the effect of the type of their residence and care they receivesatisfaction level and the amount of activity they involve in during their routine lives that the seniors at an institution(institutioners) and at home(homers) can feel individuallyon their feelings about each difference of the living standard.
The study subjects of this paper were confined to the older persons living in an free-of-charge institution for the aged and those served at home mainly in the northern part of the Chungcheong province and the study had focused on the real patterns of their fundamental behaviors and the amount of normal activity or satisfaction level during their lives.
The results were: first, the analysis of factors of a life activity gap between 'the institutioners' and 'homers' showed me a difference in an educational background and the condition of their health. In other words, those with no background demonstrated a large amount of activity at an institution, while those with above a grade background were more active at home. For the health condition, the healthier condition of those both at an institution and at home, the more active they were during everyday life. Second, the investigation of a life satisfaction gap between the institutioners and homers showed no difference in age, an educational background, religion, and the presence of a wife or child, but a partial difference in the living standard or their health condition. It namely told that the healthier condition of the institutionsers and homers, the higher satisfaction they enjoyed, the main effect of the health condition. Further, in case of the institutioners, the healthier, the more satisfied they were, I could see, compared with the fact that not in a very bad state of health, the homers regularly kept their satisfaction level high, the main effect of interpersonal relations.
The above study results indicates no big difference between life activity and satisfaction level of the institutioners and those of the homers. On the current stage of an aging society increasingly emphasizing improvement in the living standard of old age, welfare services for the institutioners and homers, a pivot of welfare services for the aged, have to be made functional to meet their mental and physical demands. Though private efforts are needed for the function to be well done, it is not until the harmonization of interest and cooperation from local communities with a government's positive aid that welfare services for the aged will be on the process of establishment and a practical assistance will be provided for the elderly to enjoy happy senescence.
