The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of body image and inferiority feeling, and to explore the relationships of the body image and inferiority in students with cerebral palsy.
For the purpose, subjects were 60 students with cerebral palsy aged 10-16 years old.
The body image was measured as scores on the ody-Cathexis Scale(BC) developed by Secord & Jourard(1953). The inferiority feeling was measured as scores on the method of measurement for inferiority feeling level developed by Sin, Man-Chul(1992).
First, the results indicated that for body image, students with cerebral palsy had a low level body image. There was not a significant difference for sex and age, but student with cerebral palsy who can walk alone had significantly higher body image than student with cerebral palsy who can't walk alone.
Second, the results indicated that inferiority feeling, student with cerebral palsy had high level inferiority feeling. There was not a significant difference for sex and age, but students with cerebral palsy who can walk alone had significantly lower body image than students with cerebral palsy who can't walk alone.
Third, the results indicated that body image was significantly and negatively related to the inferiority feeling. Correlational analysis revealed studetns with cerebral palsy with higher levels of the body image endorsed lower inferiority feeling. A better understanding of correlation between body image and inferiority feeling may lead implications for better therapeutic interventions for students with cerebral palsy, and the further research is recommended to evaluate the effects of body image following the programs associated with the inferiority feeling.
