The purpose of this thesis was to examine the effects of Frankl's logotherapy on the group counselling. Especially I attempted to prove that logotherapy should be useful to help university students to find their life meaning, to fulfill their inner meaning, and to overcome their existential frustration.
The programme for the group logotherapy consists of three values to search life meaning, which Dr. Frankl offers, and of five existential meanings to be human being. The former includes three values for creativity, experience, and attitude, and the latter includes five meanings of life and death, pain, sin, work, and love.
The group was given to the university students 10 sessions of group logotherapy lasting 150 minutes each session once a week from May 3rd to June 29th, 2002. The subjects took part in the experiment are all 20 students who attending C University in K city in May 2002. Among them 10 students were under the experimental group and the others(10) under the controlled group. The subjects were selected randomly on the process: first, I got all 150 students from freshmen to senior, without distinction of sex, taking the general courses on mental health. After PIL test, I decided to select the subjects among the students with the scores under 92 because they showed a lack of life meaning in terms of the interpretation on PIL results; finally, I chose 20 students who agreed to take part in the experiment.
The design for this research is a type of combination which is carried out by combining variables between-subjects and within-subjects. The variables of between-subjects are two groups(the experimental group/the controlled group), whereas the variables on within-subjects are three periods(pre/post/follow-up). Data processing was done by SPSS for windows 10.0 in order to testify the effect of the research procedure. The process carried out ANOVA which took the groups and the testing periods to be independent variables and PIL scores and Logo test scores to be subordinate variables. In the test, .05 level of confidence was used.
The conclusions derived from the analysis on and the results of the experiment are as follows:
First, research tried to testify the effectivity of the group logotherapy on university students who are searching for life meaning. It statistically indicates significant differences between the experimental group and the controlled group as well as between after the experiment and before the experiment. The result shows that students who were on the experimental group had more higher degree of searching life meaning than those who were not. Thus, I suggest that the group logotherapy should be useful for students to search their life meanings.
Second, research tried to testify the effectivity of the group logotherapy on university students for their inner meaning fulfillment. It statistically indicates significant differences between the experimental group and the controlled group as well as between pre-test and pro-test.
Third, research tried to testify the effectivity of the group logotherapy on university students for overcoming their existential frustration. However it does not indicate any significant differences between the experimental group and the controlled group according to the final analysis and statistics of the test results. The hypotheses should be abandoned because of the fact that most of the students in the experiment have relatively lower levels of existential frustration. It means that they does not seem to be existentially frustrated. Also the hypotheses should be abandoned because of the fact that the programme for the group logotherapy does not proper items to measure the existential frustration.
I make the following suggestions on the basis of the results of the research.
First, the succeeding studies on the group logotherapy should be followed with small groups which are more effective than large groups.
Second, it is urgent that the succeeding studies on the logotherapy should develop proper tools to measure life meanings which could reflect the cultural and social reality of Korean youth.
Third, the group logotherapy should be applied by extending the range of age.
