It may be impossible for an individual to feel completely free in life. This is because human beings, as a social animal, lives in relationships with others. Yet at the same time, human beings have instinctive desire to live a life free from anything that constrains or oppresses them. Contrary to their desire, they endlessly get entangled in the complexity of relationships with society and with one another. In particular, women, unlike men, experience difficulty establishing their identity in the complex relationships they have. Women desire to realize their potential as the member of society and at the same time they have to live as a wife and mother. The difficulty women have to undergo results from the physiological difference between men and women: women have the reproductive ability while men do not.
Thus, for women to find their identity, they have to question about conventional ideas of femininity formed due to women's physiological difference and seek solutions to the problems they face. To that end, I will examine how the idea of femininity is distorted by looking at the way that it is idealized, considered as a symbol of nature, and reformed in society. Also, I aim to express inherent femininity in my works to show how women can transcend myths about them and become people with independent mind and strong will.
Inherent femininity is women's inner instinct repressed in male-dominated society. Failing to express this inherent femininity makes women passive and unproductive. Therefore, women should go through the process of expressing this repressed femininity to transform themselves. And I think doing so is also the expression of their will to regain their transcendence. To that end, women should overcome narcissism, unreasonable longing for a son, and the fear for menstruation and reproduction. In my opinion, art can be a tool to raise questions about conventional ideas of femininity.
I have produced soft sculptures by weaving to express the inherent femininity. While producing them, I have found that the softness of fabrics has affinity with femininity displayed in society. Fabrics are woven by combining the weft and the warp, so they provide flexibility. In a similar way, women shape themselves by weaving many connections in their life. When they are young, they take the father as an idol and find their future in the mother. And when they grow up, they tend to realize their potential through their husbands or children. In other words, women continuously establish relations with others and develop flexibility to deal with any problem they face in their life.
"What is femininity?" This is the question I had when I started this paper. My answer to the question is that the essence of femininity is a "receptive change". Women accept whatever happens to them as their fate but at the same time they produce the power to overcome it within themselves. In other words, women can never lose their identity under any circumstance. Rather, they can muster courage to transcend any barriers to self-realization. My weaving works depict this inherent femininity. The creation of these works has been the process of expressing myself through the plastic language to overcome my own prejudice about women.
