The history of fiber art is based on the history of tapestry in the Middle Ages. At that time, multiple powers were given to weaving teachers since they personally made a design for the circumstances of the times or religious doctrines. However, it is not to be ignored that, during the medieval times, tapestry was not valued as a true art but a function of an artisan. The history of tapestry is not significant in constructing an independent formative world based on creativeness but it is meaningful only as a record. In this regard, the starting point of fiber art may be “Bauhaus Textiles” which is a produce of Arts and Crafts Movement which was developed from a practical viewpoint principally by William Morris. “Bauhaus Textiles” is not characterized as much by its ‘artistic function’ but by its ‘product trend’ as a design combined with the industry. The realization of an aesthetic value of ‘beauty in practicality’ has its limit to stress the original formativeness of fiber art. Yet, it is mostly believed that tapestry as a modern fiber art in its true meaning was started with “Biennale International De La Tapisserie, Lausanne” promoted by Jean Lurcat. Lausanne Biennale had established fiber art as an independent formative genre and led from the 1st fiber art revival in 1962 to the 14th revival, which was ended with the 16th in 1995 when its existence encountered the limits. Since Lausanne Biennale as the tow truck for fiber art revival disappeared from the stage, fiber art dwindled. And as an alternative for the resurrection of fiber art, “From Lausanne to Beijing" was begun in 2000 in Beijing. The 1st Beijing Biennale was held in 2000 and the 7th in 2012, always pursuing after the “revival and transcendence” of the Lausanne spirit. This thesis is aimed to investigate preceding researches into Lausanne Biennale and into the meanings, significance and current state of Beijing Biennale, with a view to understanding the background of the emergence of “From Lausanne to Beijing.” The methodologies used include an analysis of the 1st through 7th exhibitions, an investigation into prize-winning works in the past, and an additional analysis of trends in other works than the prize winners. The analysis of trends is applied with expression techniques, extension of materials, and 3-dimensional extensity. As for expression techniques and extension of materials, an analysis is primarily made of modern plane works, which break away from traditional materials or techniques, with a focus on 3-dimensional extensity based on the concept of installation and soft sculpture. This research is aimed to analyze the ‘resurrection and transcendence’ of Lausanne Biennale, the role of Beijing Biennale which reflects the spirit of Lausanne Biennale and serves as a scaffold for a new jump of fiber art, and also the trends of modern fiber art which are revealed in the works of artists participating in Beijing Biennale, with a view to reconfirm the position of Beijing Biennale which an extension of Lausanne Biennale. Experts clearly accept such substantial discourses as insist that Lausanne Biennale is the manifestation of the spirit of the times including the historical background after the 2nd World War and the Abstract Expressionism rising in America; and it is also true that Beijing Biennale has its limit and less remarkable results compared to Lausanne Biennale, because inclusive concepts unique to the pluralized modern society have an influence on modern art. Yet, such a phenomenon is recognized as a transient step of fiber art which has got out of stagnation and is braced for a jump. It is very encouraging that Lausanne Biennale occurred with the West including Europe and America as its setting while Beijing Biennale leads to the 2nd revival of fiber art centering in Asia. Lastly, it is expected that the position of ‘From Lausanne to Beijing’ will be strengthened as an international biennale true to its name, which will lead the resurrection and the 2nd revival period of fiber art.

Textile arts are accompanied by the history of textile. Starting with the first functional rayon, which is man-made, tapestry has made many changes in fiber identification through various experiments and developments. Textile has begun to develop into arts in the type of tapestry. It has been manifested in various representation techniques such as woven fabric, sewing, knotting using natural materials such as raw silk thread, woolen yarn, cotton yarn, hemp yarn, and artificial materials such as polyester yarn and nylon yarn; various experiments have been made to develop the internal expression of arts in history. The 'Lausanne International Fiber Art Biennale' has been constantly demonstrating the artistic function of the textile and a milestone for new extension in textile for 30 years. The researcher analyzed the Beijing International Fiber Biennale in this research, and this exposition showed a new expansion in textile art. Textile art has been changed in the way by the many challenges and efforts of various artists in the history. Modern textile arts are extended to various forms and are responsible for mask genre which contemporary arts pursue. Especially, 'tapestry' has kept the tradition silently in the context of textile arts and becomes a comprehensive artistic field, expressing the wisdom and value of human life. The researcher expressed the city image through tapestry technique of textile arts. 'City' is a theme that gives much inspiration to artists because it includes not only the survival and development of mankind but also the culture. In addition, emotions as a color felt in the space called 'city', or stared by object, embody the form of each building; and cultural characteristics possessed by particular cities express emotions in various shapes and colors; also formulate the interaction between city and modern people in tapestry form. This study can be regarded as the process of making perspective through the process of interpreting and reconstructing the image of the city with the emotion of the researcher. The researcher comprehends how various expressions of colors, techniques, and imagery have made progress in modern textile arts through researches on the history of textiles and textile arts; expects that various experiments done by the researcher in traditional tapestry can contribute to another positive expansion in textile arts.
ABSTRACT A Study on the Modular Furniture Design Based on Granny Square Crochet Motif Su Joung Shin Department of Fiber and Textile Art Graduate School of Hongik University Supervised by Professor Chul Yong Choi This paper explores the design of modular furniture by employing the motif crochet technique to create textile modules and transforming their inherent softness into a hardened state. The study investigates the potential of textile techniques as a medium for three-dimensional sculpture expression. By applying motif crochet as a new method of three-dimensional artistic representation, this research aims to expand the scope of it application. The motivation for this study arises from the researcher’s ongoing interest in the materiality of textiles and a desire to establish a sustainable artistic identity through works that express subjective and internal narratives. As its core, the study involves theoretical research on crochet motifs and modular furniture design, coupled with an analysis of furniture pieces crafted using these principles. This research originates from an exploration of textile properties. While working with knitted materials, the researcher observed that the softness of textiles often limits their sculptural potential. This limitation led to the question: What if the soft properties of textiles could be transformed into a hardened form, allowing them to stand independentlly as structures? The study seeks to examine how such a transformation affects the form and explores the new possibilities it creates. By using textiles as primary material in furniture design – traditionally dominated by rigid materials like stone, wood, or metal - and crafting pieces through knitting techniques, the study aims to introduce a sense of unfamiliarity in everyday objects, sparking curiosity and engagement from viewers. Furthermore, by scaling up crochet motifs to create furniture, the research investigates the potential for expanding the use of the granny square crochet technique into novel sculptural forms. In the first phase of the study, the general characteristics of crochet were analyzed, with a particular focus on its differences from knitting. Compared to other textile technique, crochet has a relatively short history. Emerging in the 19th century with lace crochet, the technique has since evolved into a wide variety of styles, achieving rapid development in the 20th century. This study specifically examines motif crochet while also exploring related styles such as lace crochet, tapestry crochet, Tunisian crochet, and freeform crochet to highlight their adaptability and expansion potential. Alongside this stylistic diversification, the scope of crochet’s application has expanded significantly, from decorative lace items to an established technique in fiber art. Notably, the granny square motif crochet, which has spanned from 20th century traditions to contemporary 21st century design, demonstrates a wide range of applications. By analyzing its use in fashion brands, the study delves into its popularity and underlying appeal. Through an in-depth investigation of the classic granny square motif – a central technique in this research – it was confirmed that this pattern is a foundation element of motif crochet, celebrated for its accessibility and repetitive structure. This simplicity is emphasized in the final expressions of the study’s work. The next phase involved exploring the modular system as a method for forming three-dimensional structures with crochet modules. To this end, the concepts of “module” and “modularization” were examined, focusing on their evolution and influence in furniture design through various examples. The study indentified the key principles of modulaity – diversity, scalablity, and flexibility derived from the processes of division and recombination – and integrated these characteristics into the artistic process. Building on the theoretical foundation, the study proceeded with the production and analysis of original works. The production process emphasized transforming the properties of textile modules and concretizing modular structures into three-dimensional forms. From an experimental perspective, the research focused on the material transformation of textiles, conducting practical tests to identify essential conditions for crafting textile modules and analyzing the variables influencing outcomes. The hardened textile modules were then modified and combined in various configurations to conduct structural experiments. Through these explorations of materiality and structure, the final design was determined, with a focus on showcasing modularity. The resulting work offers viewers an unexpected visual experience by presenting materials and structures that defy traditional expectations. By merging crochet motifs with modular system, the study achieved experimental expressions that feel both unfamiliar and strikingly impactful, resulting in a body of work that leaves a lasting impression.
Trauma refers to the ‘psychological damage’ that occurs from the result of a distressing external event. Abnormal psychology defines it as a ‘psychological injury.’ Trauma can be caused by both direct and indirect influences of various types of events, including war and domestic violence. I incorporated fiber art in my work that encompasses the traumatic childhood experience. The study discusses the manifestation of trauma and its healing process through fiber art by analyzing diverse traumatic experiences based on the psychological theory of trauma and the research by Judith Lewis Herman (1942~). Herman organized trauma into three main symptoms as hyperarousal, intrusion, and constriction through consultation and experimentation. From various relevant cases, these symptoms were witnessed to reveal in different forms with specific details. Works by Frida Kahlo (1907~1954) and Kyungja Chun (1925~2015) embody symptoms and express inner-imagery through symbolic objects and self-image expressions. As I assumed that the healing process stems from emotional relief of traumatic experience, amongst several relevant psychological treatments, I analyzed a distinct art therapy capable of naturally expressing the victim’s inner consciousness. Due to the protective nature and softness of the fabric, it serves the purpose of healing in art therapy amongst various materials. I conducted profound research on the works by Louise Bourgeois (1911~2010), Eva Hesse (1936~1970), and Alberto Burri (1915~1995), who experienced trauma and portrayed the anguish and its aftermath through fiber art. The interpretation of painful emotion through the object of self-image, as well as the emphasis of the wounded heart through entangled threads on the ripped cut edge of the fabric, are similarly shown both in my work and the oeuvre of various artists. As a symbolic object for the trauma, my work employs self-image to reflect experienced emotions and symptoms through expressions, posture, and hand shapes. Also, as the primary expression techniques, screen printing and fabric collage were used and studied. The self-image was expressed with an escalated depth and various textures using the screen printing technique. By exposing traumatic experiences through the collage technique with traditional fabrics, I envisioned a genuine empathy with the audiences and connected to society in a broad sense. This process infuses an opportunity to emerge from past wounds by expressing traumatic experiences and embracing the pain for a better future. I anticipate that this study delivers the change of social perception of trauma and fiber art development concerning mind healing.
Organic body starts subjective activity with simultaneous force of life. So it is difficult to separate between organic body and its power. Therefore, life and force of life could be considered for a same concept. Nature circulates formation and degradation of life as her subjective activity, and individuals inside nature are in existence with a whole huge organic body by organic communicating each other. A notion for nature as a huge organic body is something to do with a mutual relation between force of life and nature, and it found same root of force of life for existence and the law of nature. Natural phenomenon or the shape of growth are called by 'organic form', and organic body is the peculiar form to have self-controlled order and structural pattern. The form of organic body itself contains infinite diversity. Organic form is the most proper concept for harmony between human and nature. Artists pursuing 'organic life' have created bluntly criticizing works for the material civilization, scientific technique and rational point. On the other hand, they are interested in natural structure, unconsciousness and imaginary area, which reverts 'organic body' in their works. They have paid attention to transformation and dynamism and characteristics such as informality and tried to make them tangible with their own works. Formality of life in art is not independent component but mutual related and dependent. Art works have organic structure and form, organic force of life until reaching life pattern and human emotion, which are transformation, development and growth etc. Formative image-with the characteristics of whole life body composing of dynamic function of life-is presented by organic force of life, only with mutual organic order. Author used contrary concept in order to present change and dynamism of growth and degradation, which is the characteristic of life body. The contrary concept is sublated with opposite antonym of formation and extinction, life and death and transformed into a whole new meaning. Therefore, the meaning of force of life is much more amplified by experiencing metaphysical truth. Dadaist have expressed their idea with reform method using object in order to deny ready-made art and its all conventional techniques. consequently, various mysterious and shocking materials have been replaced with artistic materials. The use of fiber material and object in author's work is detail constituent expressing the contrary meaning of formation and degradation and interpretation for conventional aesthetic consciousness. Fiber material frees itself from the practical property, forms aesthetic point of view inside author's work and includes a conception of material itself. Author intents to present conceptual analysis of organic image, contents interpretation, subjective formality of organic form, and relation of communication between formative work and spectator inside space, historical meaning of fiber formative art and necessity for expression with fiber work. Author has realized that the meaning of this work is existential subject and communication with outer world. Consequently, this is same with fundamental principle between nature and life.
The facial images in this study are inspired by contemporary people. The main purpose of this study is examining the facial expression and human emotion exposed by sense organ. In the modern society, people can easily encounter various facial images due to the universalized mass media. Also, we find out other person’ emotion or wisdom from their facial expressions. As a relationship is going on, people show their real nature and mine, and people recognize the partners’ real feeling or emotion from their facial expression. In this context, the researcher considers a face as motivation of expressing one’s feeling or emotion. Therefore, the researcher imagined various forms through a face that is aggregate of sense, and expressed the human nature and absence of pain within the forms. Emotional wound caused from individual relationships was projected to piece of fabric, and the fabric pieces embodied facial form of human by cutting or attaching. Most of the materials were selected from ordinary stuff, and the selections were inspired by modern art techniques such as needlework, weaving, paper making, and quilt. These various techniques were used with collage technique. The main material of this work is donated old clothes, for emphasizing everyday-ness of human relationships. In this process, the researcher tried to find out random combination of the materials by adding paints or attaching the piece of fabric. The stitch technique also used for emphasizing particular part or completing the work. The worked fabric pieces were juxtaposed on the canvas, so configurated the facial form and images. The three dimensional facial forms were embodied into flat canvas either, so the object was divided into various point of view. Individual fabric pieces were examined or combined for establishing front, side, and back of the three dimensional facial forms. From this work, facial image was dismantled and distorted. The researcher considered those dismantlement and distortion as emotional wound from human relationship. Therefore, the researcher assigned emotional healing to the fabric combination work by combining and attaching. Fabric expression using all shorts of mixed materials became the starting point of disintegration of traditional art genre. Multiple textures was expressed and facial images were magnified by fabric-collage depending on various fabrics and sewing machine, For the more effective image expression, the researcher examined the effect when a object and fabric was negotiated as well as the process of constructing a figure. This study would be served as assistant of formative expressions that visualizing the emotions, and opportunity for viewers to recognize the nature of human being and emotion comes through a face.
All digital images we encounter on TV or a computer in modern society are composed of small dots called "pixel". We perceive photo images only through visible forms, images themselves, but when we amplify images continuously, we come to know that they are composed of small invisible squared pixels. The researcher dissembled picture images into the unit of pixels, thereby all the more simplifying the forms of objects and visualizing the images of pixels. Photos are images storing records of the past and further emotional media rousing recollection. The researcher intended to embody what came across the researcher's mind as memories containing emotions into formative arts as if pixels that got together were expressed as photo images by connecting parts of memories recollected through photos with pixels composing photo images. In addition, the topics of the photos used in the works concerned the researcher and the researcher's surrounding people and the meaning of observing and discovering myself through photos was connoted. Digital technology brought about changes in techniques or materials of artists' works. Attempts with various materials and techniques are reflected as characteristics of the modern fabric arts. Fabric as an artistic medium presents the expansion of the modern art area and new perspective of material use. The researcher comprehended the concept of pixels and examined the notion and production process of fabric casting technique, intending to express pixels in pictures formatively. As materials for casting, various fabrics such as polyester, organza, and cotton were employed. The researcher applied casting technique, digital textile printing technique, and collage technique. Besides, stitch and LED lighting were utilized to graft photo pixel images onto fabric arts effectively. The researcher expects this study to be helpful for effectively making formative expression of pixels composing pictures and presenting various possibilities of fabric casting. Nowadays, based on logical and rationalistic thinking, human beings don't rely on the optimistic belief for Utopia that the reasonable system, universality and absolute truth of the universe can be found, any longer. Unfortunately, with the development of scientific technologies, the reality of human beings facing mechanical civilization has been under a crisis that their autonomous liberties have been deprived with instrumentalization and deindividuation. Furthermore, the two bloody world wars demolished utterly even confidence in human rationalities. Such switchover of world outlook brought human beings to despair and vanity, leading to collapse of the existing moral criteria by loss of the absolute truth which forms the foundation of life. In this century, relativism and pluralism admitting various ways are spread, no longer the philosophical questions - concerning epistemology (studies on knowledge), metaphysics (studies on being) and ethical matters - could provide their definite solutions. Instead of, we live in the diversity age when a number of different world outlooks coexist and everything follows their own rules. Yet, the diversity excluding eternal unification may deprive them of the solidarity of community and cause isolation, which may make human beings face confusion and apathy, as negative aspects. Thus, suffering chaos in the times of self-contradiction when the Absolute is denied and the diversity coexists with isolation, the researcher attempted to find a solution through Christian view of the world depending on linguistic revelations available of communication. As the Christian view of the world recognizes the concept of revelation on the basis of agreement with the law of causality, it is possible to gain an answer to the questions concerning epistemology, ontology and ethical matters through exchangeable linguistic revelations, i.e., the Bible. According to the revelations, since a human being was created as a differential figure from the other creatures by the origin called the Moral Absolute, it has value and significance. In addition, as a human being is not a programmed mechanical but freewill-granted entity, it has responsibility for choice. This recognition forms the basis of dualism inside a human being, that is, the instinctive personality resembling the Moral Absolute's figure and the barbarity degenerating the personality selectively at his or her own will. In the light of such Christian view of the world, relinquishing to obtain the revelation-based recognition and unified response on life means despair. Because it is impossible to offer any motive that enables to live as a human being, leading to the loss of absolute ethical criteria and the lack of communication. The despair may be derived from the broken relationship between the Moral Absolute and a human being. So, the revelation available of communication the Moral Absolute grants to a human being indicates the recovery of the relationship, healing of a human being sunk in the depths of despair and the divine love, Agape. Such turnover of the researcher's view of the world resulted in a great change in creative activities and in discovering the value of human creativity as humanity. The natural desire for communication with the pleasure of creative activities stimulated the researcher to embody the thought and emotion. Since the art is defined as highly advanced metaphors and symbolic expressions, a message to communicate can be highlighted more, which allows the audience to induce rich thinking and feeling. Accordingly, by figuring the images of healing and agape, the researcher thought that a new creative process could be reached with imperfect but sincere communication in rather open relationship with the audience than one-way closed one. From the examinations as mentioned above, the researcher come to the findings as follows; first, the moderns' despair and human limitations could be recognized through studying the concepts of various views of the world outlooks and it was found that the answers to the philosophical questions concerning epistemology, ontology and morality could be gotten from revelations available of communication with the moral and infinite absolute being. In addition, through such revelations, the researchers could suggest the necessity of agape to recover primarily natural human figures from humanities being damaged on the basis of deterministic thinking - regarding a human being as a programmed mechanical - and confusion and chaos caused by the loss of moral criteria. Second, through handling textile media in expressing the image of agape, the researcher could understand deeply their soft physical properties and flexibility and expand the range of applications, and through analyzing the meanings of collage and sewing techniques, the researcher could clearly comprehend the correlation and suitability of formative expressions and symbolism. Finally, the researcher could newly recognize the details of thinking by arranging the internal meanings implied in each work and reviewing the reflected thoughts. From the findings above, it was identified that only when the horizontal relation between the moral Divinity and human beings is recovered, human beings can regain their own natural personalities, and furthermore grant the significance to creative activities as the essence of human being.

In fabric art, dyeing is sometimes a creative artistic act beyond simply a technique. Dyeing has grown as a separate area of art thanks to the evolution of aesthetic sense and the development of engineering technologies. Therefore, it is essential to adopt advanced technologies not only for work efficiency but also for the expression of works. Cotton fabrics, reactive dyes and acid dyes have been frequently used in dyeing art pieces. In a dyebath, nevertheless, the repulsive force between a cotton fabric and anions ('-' ion) existing in these dyes obstructs the binding of the dyes and the fabric. For this reason, when cotton fabrics are dyed using reactive dyes, an electrolyte such as neutral salt and alkali like soda ash (Na_(2)CO_(3)) must be added. However, alkali causes the hydrolysis of reactive dyes, and as a result, reduces the final color yield. In addition, hydrolyzed dyes cause environmental contamination. Furthermore acid dyes are known not to color cotton fabrics. To remedy these weak points, cotton fabrics need to be treated with a special surface active agents to introduce a cationic ('+' ion) site. The agent is nothing but a cationic agent. The surface to which cationic site is introduced can be colored with anionic dyes through the force to attract opposite ions without using an electrolyte or alkali. Yet cationic agent have been discussed only limitedly in the areas of fabric engineering and chemistry, so difficult to be approached by artists. This is why cationic agent have not been utilized in the area of dyeing art. In this situation, the present researcher conducted an experiment to apply the merits of cationic agent in creating works, and complicated engineering concepts were worked out based on the researcher's understanding. According to the result of the experiment, it was possible to color at a high degree with both reactive dyes and acid dyes at a relatively low temperature in a short time without the addition of a electrolyte and alkali. Besides, the possibility of a new expression method using cationic agent was found. What is more, the use of cationic agent appeared not to affect color or dischargeability, so it is highly adoptable in creating dyeing art works. Thus, the use of cationic agent along with existing coloring methods will expand the domain of expression. Engineering seems to be separated from arts but the active adoption of engineering achievements will certainly open a new horizon of arts.

Deconstructionism advocates that all objects are independent beings with individual autonomy and dignity, and believes that the structure and culture of society are made up of interactions between different styles. The theoretical concept of disintegrationism became the philosophical foundation of disruptive art, which sought to combine various styles, to express diversity and individuality away from the existing fixed framework. The works, which were expressed in a decentralized manner, were shown with unstructured and reconstructed structures. The work, which features unstructured characteristics, expressed the ambiguity and deconstruction of boundaries. These characteristics were also used and applied in the flow of art history, and were expressed as elements of dismantling, such as uncertainty and overlapping in various works. This allowed more diversification of the style of dismantling art to express a different form that deviated from the conventional formal structure. Thus, in this work, we attempted to express the fibers of the dismantling stripes by utilizing fabrics based on the theory of dismantling. To this end, we looked at stripe paintings and textile works that were combined with elements of the formative features formed based on disruptive ideas. This established the background of the researcher's work by analyzing the stripping process. The main contents of this study are as follows. First, we analyzed the characteristics of disruptive art with the consideration of the theory of dismantlement. Second, we analyzed the concepts and types of stripes and looked at the variational forms. Third, we studied the work of the dismantling of stripes based on uncertainty and overlap among the formative elements of the dismantling features. Fourth, it attempted to express the fibers of the dismantling stripe through drawing using a cotter and folding through the jaw. Such disruptive stripe fiber representation methods have enabled the expression of creative works aimed at combining various elements to achieve an inversely synthesized comprehensive art.
