This investigation by means of a prevalence survey was to determine ADHD children in Pusan public elementary schools using the ADHD Symptom Checklist.
The ADHD Symptom Checklist (ADHD-SC4) is a screening instrument for the behavioral symptoms of attention-disorder/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), with the addition of a peer conflict scale (PCS) and a stimulant side effects checklist (SSEC) to the Questionnaire. Items in the ADHD-SC4 are based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (APA, 1994), and the reliability and validity allowed in the United States of America. To interpret its scores two kinds of methods were used, naming symptom count scores and symptom severity scores. However, it is important to emphasize the fact that the ADHD-SC4 is simply a symptom Questionnaire. It does not make diagnoses.
The ADHD-SC4 in this study was translated into Korean for the first time, and we were thus able to analyze reliability based on data of this study: Cronbach-α= .94(N=42).
As the purpose of this study, first, we revealed the total prevalence rate, the prevalence rate of ADHD types: ADHD inattentive type, ADHD hyperactivity type, ADHD combined type and the prevalence rate of severity ranking; low severity, moderate severity, and high severity. Second, differences of tendency between the parent completed checklist and the teacher completed checklist were suggested. Third, we described the prevalence rate concerned with ADHD symptoms categories; as well as the severity ranking of oppositional defiant disorder and peer conflict scale.
The results of this study were as follows:
First, the total ADHD children of prevalence rate indicated 4% of total subjects. In the parent completed checklist, the prevalence rate of ADHD inattention type was 0.9%, ADHD hyperactivity type was 1.5%, and ADHD combined type was 0.7%. In the teacher completed checklist, the prevalence rate of ADHD inattention type was 2.3%, ADHD hyperactivity type was 2.7%, and ADHD combined type was 1.5%. As for the analysis of ADHD prevalence rate of severity ranking, the parent completed checklist distribution was distributed more at "low severity" than others and the teacher completed checklist was distributed more at "moderate severity" than others.
Second, the differences of tendency between the parent completed checklist and the teacher completed checklist indicated the highest equal rate in ADHD inattention type.
Third, as described the prevalence rate concerned with ADHD symptoms categories, it was explained by means of two kind of categories. In severity ranking of oppositional defiant disorder, the parent completed checklist was more distributed at "low severity" than others and the teacher completed checklist was more distributed at "high severity" than others. In the peer conflict scale, the teacher completed checklist was distributed at "high severity" and "low severity" similarity.
