외국인 노동자의 정신건강에 관한 연구 = Study on the mental health of foreign laborers

국문 초록 (Abstract)

1987년 이후 국내에 유입되기 시작한 외국인 노동자는 국내 열악한 노동환경과 타문화권 적응으로 인하여 정신건강상의 많은 문제를 야기하고 있다.
그러나 외국인 노동자들의 정신건강에 관한 문제는 그 심각성에도 불구하고 소수의 연구만이 이루어졌으며 이 소수의 연구 또한 노동자의 영역이 부각되어 이들을 둘러싸고 있는 개인, 가족, 직장, 사회체계등 외국인 노동자의 정신건강에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 다양한 요인들이 간과되어 왔다.
이에 본 연구는 인간과 외부환경간의 상호작용에 관한 유용한 관점을 제시해주는 생태체계학적 관점을 활용하여 외국인 노동자의 정신건강에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요인들을 살펴봄으로서 외국인 노동자들의 정신건강을 증진하기 위한 보다 효과적인 임상개입방법을 모색해보고자 진행되었다.
이에 본 연구는 외국인 노동자의 생태체계별로 개인체계에서는 한국어 수준을, 가족체계에서는 가족 국내 거주 여부, 사회체계에서는 사회적 관계망의 크기, 사회적 지지의 정도를 주요변인으로 설정하여 외국인 노동자 90명을 대상으로 2001년 5월 13일부터 6월 17일까지 구조화된 설문지를 활용하여 외국인노동자의 정신건강에 관한 연구를 실시하였다.
연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.
개인체계의 한국어 수준과 가족체계의 가족 국내 거주 여부는 외국인 노동자의 정신건강에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났으나 사회체계의 사회적 관계망 크기(p<.01)와 사회적 지지정도(p<.01)는 각각 외국인 노동자의 정신건강에 유의미한 영향력을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 사회적 지지 유형별 영향력을 살펴본 결과, 정보제공(p<.05)이 외국인 노동자의 정신건강에 유의미한 영향력이 있는 것으로 나타나 외국인 노동자의 정신건강 증진을 위한 개입방향에 중요한 함의를 제공하였다.
이에 연구결과를 토대로 외국인 노동자들의 정신건강을 증진하기 위한 임상적 개입방안을 제언하면 다음과 같다.
첫째, 외국인 노동자들이 스스로 자조모임을 구성할 수 있도록 지원이 필요하다.
둘째, 외국인 노동자들의 정보습득능력을 향상시키기 위한 교육이 필요하다.
셋째, 외국인 노동자들이 정보를 습득할 수 있는 다양한 방안이 지원되어야 한다.
넷째, 지역사회내 외국인 노동자들에 대한 복지 서비스가 확충되어야 한다.
다섯째, 외국인 노동자들의 정신건강에 영향을 미치는 다양한 요인들에 관한 좀더 심도있는 연구들이 진행되어야 한다.
본 연구는 다음과 같이 외국인 노동자들을 대상으로 정신건강을 증진하기 위한 사회사업적 개입방안을 모색함에 있어 사회적 지지 측면을 강화하고 정보제공위주의 서비스를 제공한다면 외국인 노동자의 정신건강이 유의미하게 향상될 것이라는 임상개입방안의 방향을 제시한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Among the many social issues arising from the steady inflow of foreign laborers into Korea since 1987, a serious problem concerns the fact that the foreign workers have been prone to suffer from numerous psychological troubles, due to the difficulties in adjusting to a different cultural environment and the heavily inadequate working conditions.
However, despite its severity, only a few studies has been conducted on the issue of the mental health of foreign workers and emphasizing the labor musket issue the existing studies has not been able to fully address the diversity of factors such as individual, family, work, and social systemhat can influence the mental health of foreign workers.
Through examining the diverse factors influencing the mental health of foreign workers this study attempts to devise a nine effective method of social work intervention method to prormte the rental health of foreign workers, utilizing the eco-systemic theory ehich provides useful insights into the interactions between individuals and the external environment.
WIth this aim, this study conducted a survey m the mental health of 90 foreign workers from 2001.5.31 through 6.17, using a quest ionnaire vhich established as major variables the level of Korean language proficiency at the personal level, cohabitation with family members at the family level, the size of the social relationship network and social support at the societal level.
The summry of the research results are as follows.
The level of Korean language proficiency at the individual level and co-habitation with family members at the family level was revealed to be statistically insignificant factors in the nental health of foreign workers. However, the size of the social relationship net work(p<.01) and the level of societal support(p<.Ol) were found to be statistically significant factors influencing the mental health of foreign workers. Particularly, vhen examining the influence of societal support according to type, provision of information was found to have significant influence in the mental health of foreign workers, a result vhich has important implications for the future direction of assistance provided to promote the mental health of foreign workers.
Therefore, based on the above mentioned research results, the following social work intervention method be derived.
First, the societal support system for foreign workers should be provided
Second, education to improve the information accessibility of foreign workers are needed.
Third, a manual to guide and prepare foreign workers for life in Korea needs to be developed
Fourth, cormunity welfare service for foreign workers should be expanded.
The Social work intervention nethod direction this study proposes is that in the social welfare intervention for foreign workers, focusing on the social systemic intervention above other systemic interventions and expanding the provision of societal support system and services would be an effective neans of pronoting the rental health of foreign workers.
