Success or failure in education depends mainly on teachers. Successful education is based on the original activities and the public spirit which proceed from the individual teacher's volition and faith in education.
Nowadays, however, field service teachers are not in an environment in which they can educate their students with such educational volition and faith.
The purpose of this study is to examine the general tendencies of field service teachers' job satisfaction and the factors which make them dissatisfied with their job, and then to offer data for educational policy and the individual teacher's self-awakening to real education
To further this purpose, A. H. Maslow and F. Herzberg's theoretical studies on teachers' job satisfaction have been reviewed, and a questionnaire on teachers' degree of job satisfaction (see appendix) has been prepared and administered based on Bley field and Ross' questionnaire.
A total of 553 teachers in Chollanamdo responded to the questionnaire.
The data were analyzed by examining (1) the general tendencies of the individual teacher's job specifications and conditions at various schools, (2) the factors of job satisfaction, and(3) the conditions that influence job satisfaction.
The findings from the data are as follows :
1. The general tendencies of teachers' job satisfaction.
a. Half of the teachers feel affection for their students.
b. 25 percent of the teachers find teaching worth while.
c. 30 percent of the teachers have faith in education and a correct view of education.
d. One-third of the teachers are satisfied with personnel management.
e. One-third of the teachers feel they exercise their abilities fully in the Present job.
f. The teachers consistently feel that there is no real advancement in the teaching job.
2. The factors of job satisfaction
The three main factors of job satisfaction within the teaching profession are
a. placement
b. satisfaction with the teacher's job
c. teachers' view of the teaching profession
3. The conditions which influence job satisfaction are the following :
a. sex
b. teaching experience
c. educational background
d. family dependents
e. health condition
f. time spent in in-service training
g. scale of in-service training
h. special skills
In view of the results of this study, the majority of teachers lose motivation and faith in education as well as their self-expectations and are thus in a condition of severe demoralization.
It is difficult to state explicitly the cause of this situation, but, putting all the results of the investigation together, the basic causes are seen to be as follows
a. lack of security of teacher's social and economical status
b. lack of recognition feeling and human relations with superiors
c. wrong view of education
d. inadequate job security
e. loss of job satisfaction
f. discrepancies and complications confronted in the life of teaching profession
The responsibility for the depression of teachers' morale does not rest with a single class but with all the classes of our society, most of all, with the teachers concerned and the educational authorities that take it upon themselves to protect the teaching profession and encourage learning. On the other hand, educational authority has been infringed not only by external factors but also by teachers' unprofessional behavior. Teachers must therefore reflect on their own conduct.
