The purposes of this study were to investigate the differences in children's social information-processing patterns and behavioral characteristics among four different groups of peer status, to examine the relationship between children's social information-processing patterns and social behaviors, and to evaluate the degree of predictability of peer status from social information-processing and social behavior measures. In addition, developmental and sex differences in children's social information-processing patterns and behavioral characteristics were assessed.
The subjects were 80 boys and 80 girls identified as popular, average, neglected, and rejected by their peers in the first and the third grade. A sociometric technique was used to identify children's peer status. The children were individually tested with three hypothetical social dilemmas to assess social information-processing patterns. Classroom teachers completed the social behavior rating scale to evaluate chidren's behavioral characteristics. The data were analyzed by ANOVAs, correlation analysis, and discriminant analyses.
The results of this study were as follows:
1. Children's social information-processing patterns were different according to the grade of children. First-grade children attributed a hostile intention to the peers in the hypothetical problem situations more than third-grade children did. Third graders generated more total solutions and nonaggressive solutions to the hypothetical social dilemmas than first graders.
2. Children's information-processing patterns were different by peer status. Neglected children asked for outside intervention to solve social problems more than rejected children. Rejected boys in the third grade endorsed aggressive responses more than the first grade, but the opposite pattern was found for girls.
3. Children's social behaviors were different by grade and sex. Third graders were assessed by their teachers to be more sociable-prosocial and less hostile-aggressive than first graders. The boys were assessed to be more hostile-aggressive and hyperactive-distractive than the girls.
4. Children's social behaviors were different by peer status. Popular and average children were rated by their teachers to be more sociable-prosocial than rejected children. Neglected children were rated to be more anxious-withdrawn than popular children. Rejected group was more hos tile-aggressive than the other groups. The hyperactive-distractive behavior of the neglected group increased with grade, whereas that of the other groups decreased.
5. A total of 63% of children were classified correctly into one of the three peer status groups on the basis of social information-processing and social behavior measures. Especially, hyperactive-distractive, anxious-withdrawn, sociable-prosocial behaviors, and the number of interventions requested were important predictors of peer status.
