The purpose of this dissertation was to help hearing impaired students have healthy mental health and optimistic self-concept, and to offer the basic data for their efficient adjustment in school activities.
The specific purposes were 1) to find out the characteristics of mental health of the hearing impaired students, 2) to find out the characteristics of self-concept of the hearing impaired students, and 3) to identify the correlation between mental health and self-concept of the hearing impaired students.
To achieve the stated purposes of this study, the following research problems were set forth.
Research problem I. What is the characteristics of mental health of the hearing impaired students?
1. What is the usual tendency of mental health of the hearing impaired students?
2. Do sex and age differences of mental health of the hearing impaired students appear?
Research problem II. What is the characteristics of self -concept of the hearing unpaired students?
1. What is the usual tendency of self-concept of the hearing impaired students?
2. Do sex and age differences of self concept of the hearing impaired students appear?
Research problem III. What correlation between mental health and self concept of the hearing impaired students is there?
The subjects of this study consisted of 86 secondary students including 43 boys and 13 girls who were attending in hearing impaired schools located in Taegu and Pusan to investigate the research questions.
As for the instruments of this study, Korean Manual of Symptom Checklist 90-Revision by Kim, Kwang -III(1984) in the adapted form by Kim, Bong Eun(1988) and Self- Concept Scale by Kim, Me Jeong(1984) which was also selected from an existing: standardized Self -Concept Scale by Chung, Won Sik (1968) were used.
The data collected in this study were Analysed by t-test, F-test, and Pearson Correlation Coefficient to testify the statistical significance. All the analyses were done by SPSS program.
The major results of this study were as follows.
First, 1) the order of the mental health scores of the hearing impaired students was DEP, O-C, ANX, PSY, I-S, PAR, HOS, SOM, and PROB. 23.26% secondary students in e hearing impaired schools were in the best health of three mental health groups, and the rest were in the bad or worse health. The order of the most unhealthy case was PSY, DEP, ANX?I-S?HOS, O C, SOM?PAR, and PHOR. 2) There was, a special difference of sex in PAR and O-C, and male students showed more unhealthy tendency than female students. The more they were aged, hearing impaired students revealed the higher degree of mental health scores. Especially there were significant differences among four age groups(age 13-14, 15-16, 17-18, above 19) in PAR, SOM, DEP, and PHOB.
Second, 1) the subjects of this study showed lower tendency than previous researches in point of self criticism and total positive self score. Hearing impaired students showed the highest score in self-satisfaction of internal self-concept, and the highest score in family self of external self-concept. 2) In self-concept of the hearing impaired students, sex difference didn't show statistical significance except self criticism, distribution, and variability score. In comparing age, there were meaningful differences of social self, colomn variability, row variability, and distribution score among four age groups of the hearing impaired students.
Thirth, there was a correlation between mental health and self-concept of the hearing impaired students. In self criticism, there was positive correlation with mental health. In all the variables of self-concept except self-criticism, there were negative correlations with mental health. But negative difference was not observed between psychoticism and self-concept of the hearing impaired students. Distribution didn't appear an evident negative or positive correlation with mental health, either.
As a result of this study, we can find that mental health of hearing impaired students is bound up with self-concept. The result suggests that effective programs for growing emotional health and forming positive self-concept of hearing impaired students should be developed.
