The goal of this study was to develop a smart home modification program aimed at supporting the independent daily lives of individuals with physical disabilities and to create a manual for modifying the smart home based on this program. The theoretical basis employed for this study was the two models: the Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) and the Human Activity Assistive Technology (HAAT).
The development of the smart home modification program took 6 steps, and the development of the manual took 3 steps—for a total of 9 steps. In the program development process, the first step is to establish a logical model of the problem; the second step is to construct program results and objectives; the third step is to plan the program; the fourth step is to establish the program; the fifth step is to set forth an intervention application plan; and the sixth step is to verify effectiveness. The program development process was based on the Intervention Mapping (IM) model; this process includes step 7 of manual planning, step 8 of personnel training and user application, and step 9 of clinical usability evaluation. Research results: In the first stage, a literature review, case study, and smart home requirements survey were conducted to analyze how smart homes affect the quality of life of individuals with physical disabilities. This analysis helped set the direction for a smart home modification program. In the second stage, a feasible final goal expected by physically disabled people in a smart home modification program was established, while a theoretical foundation was set and a clinical application plan was prepared. In the third stage, a test bed was built. A pilot test was performed based on the second stage results to reflect user requirements, verify the feasibility of applying domestic smart home technology, and effectively plan the program. In the fourth stage, opinions from 30 experts were collected through a Delphi survey to design a program with specific content that contains the needs and deals with the problems of individuals with physical disabilities. Through this step, a solid foundation was laid for successful program development and application.
In the 5th stage, a draft of the program was created based on expert advice, and an effective implementation method for the real environment was derived. In step 6, the smart home modification program was applied to 10 physically disabled families for 6 months to confirm its effectiveness. Through this, the daily life and quality of life of physically disabled people were greatly improved, the value of the program was proven, and essential feedback for future development was derived.
In step 7 of the manual development process, a manual format was created to reflect expert advice and facilitate specific implementation by considering the program process, duration, sessions, and cost. In stage 8, 10 occupational therapists were trained, and the program was applied to 40 people with physical disabilities for 6 months to provide important feedback for improving the manual. In step 9, the usefulness of the completed smart home modification program and manual were evaluated. Appropriateness, applicability, and effectiveness all received scores of 6 or more out of 9, making it suitable for application in a clinical environment.
The significance of this study lies in its contribution to improving the quality of life for individuals with physical disabilities by developing a Korean smart home modification program and manual. In this study, we presented specific strategies to address the daily challenges faced by individuals with physical disabilities and to support their independent living, enabling them to lead more satisfying lives. Additionally, by proposing methods to enhance the practicality of smart home technology, the potential of assistive technology has been confirmed, which will contribute to expanding its usability in the future.
