The purpose of this study is in-depth understanding of the difficulties that teachers experience in teaching survival swimming in the limited situation of distance education due to COVID-19, looking at examples of how survival swimming lessons are operated for elementary school teachers. For this, four teachers instructing survival swimming at an elementary school located in Incheon Metropolitan City were selected as participants in the study, and the study was conducted through participatory observation, case study, and document data collection.
The summary of the research results is as follows. First, according to the situation of the COVID-19 infectious disease, the difficulties in the guidelines for survival swimming operation of the Ministry of Education and Office of Education were revised, and the method and timing of survival swimming were unpredictable. Second, survival swimming consisted mainly of theoretical education for third to six grade students, and mainly e-learning centers were used as a platform for content use-oriented classes. In theory, it was difficult to do it online. Third, when it comes to class preparation, both teachers and students had difficulties because the base for distance classes was not stably established. Fourth, there was a lack of customized content for remote survival swimming lessons. Lastly, the difficulties in class were difficulties in communication and feedback with learners, and difficulties in concentrating students on the class. Based on these findings, a variety of follow-up studies on survival swimming education conducted in the context of remote classes are needed.
