This study explores the influence of friendship in attaining the position of bureaucrat by investigating the friendship of the ruling class, focusing particularly on Lee Gyu-Bo(李奎報) who lived under Military Rule during the Goryeo dynasty. This will thereby help explain an important aspect of Goryeo society.
At the start of his career, Lee Gyu-Bo took the state examination(科擧) for becoming bureaucrat. Consequently, he passed gugjagamsi(國子監試) under Ryu Gong-Gwon(柳公權, 1132∼1196) in the 19th year of King Myeongjong(明宗, reign 1170∼1197) and he passed Yebusi(禮部試) under Lee Ji-Myeong(李知命, 1127一1191), Im-Yu(任濡, 1149∼1212) in the 20th year of King Myeongjong; however, he had difficulty becoming a bureaucrat in the situation that fixed number of bureaucrat was insufficient, so he looked for bureaucrat by using his friendship. He mostly relied on the relationships of Jwaju(座主)·Dongnyeon(同年) that he formed by passing the state examination, since his clan background was not remarkable in Goryeo society. As a result of this activity, he was recommended by some peoples several times; however, he failed to become a bureaucrat. This indicates that relationship of Jwaju·Dongnyeon did not have a decisive effect on becoming a bureaucrat.
Lee Gyu-Bo, who at that point was not able to become a bureaucrat despite being recommended, could become a bureaucrat through his friendship with leaders of the Choi clan regime. Furthermore, these friendships exercised absolute influence on his advancement and degradation. This situation was not by no means limited to just him. Therefore, it could be argued that the ruling class of Goryeo society regarded friendship with leaders of the Choi clan regime as a guarantee to a successful career. This was because the leaders of the Choi clan regime arbitrarily had used authority over human resources by simultaneously serving as minister of Ibu(吏部) and Byeongbu(兵部). Lee Gyu-Bo also kept company with some military officers(武臣) who were close with the Choi clan regime. This was dissimilar to previous situation in which friendship between civil servants(文臣) and military officers were not formed.
While Lee Gyu-Bo was in government service to the relation of leaders of the Choi clan regime, he entered into matrimonial relationship with Lee Baek Soon(李百順). He also made Lee Yu Sin(李惟信) and Go Baek Jung(高伯挺) his sons-in-law. Considering they did not originate from a highborn clan(門閥家門), it was proved that the clan of Lee Gyu-Bo had married with non-highborn clan(非門閥家門) for several generations. Although his clan had produced bureaucrats since grandfather`s generation, his clan was not able to enter into marriage spheres of highborn clan centered around Choi clan of Ubong because his clan did not produce many Jaechu(宰樞) and men of national merit, so descendants of Lee Gyu-Bo could not use marriage to become bureaucrats. Accordingly, since he was concerned that his clan would not be able to produce bureaucrats, he passed on the connections he made from his friendship to his descendants in order to help them enter the bureaucratic organization.
