All beings of nature must be useful and interdependent for each other because they must live together. However, because the value of all beings is equal, it is not only human beings that have to live together with mutual respect but also plants.
Buddhism also teaches that all living things are closely dependent on each other by 'Dependent arising'(緣起) are called 'sattva'(衆生), and it teaches that all 'sattva'(衆生) must be respected without harm. This idea is further expanded and clarified in Mahāyāna Buddhism.
The purpose of this study is to find out the characteristics and roles of the plants in ‘Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures’(大乘經典) and ‘Mahāyāna historical material’(大乘史書) and to find out the characteristics of these features and roles in 'View of plant in the Mahāyāna Buddhism'(大乘佛典의 植物觀), and to make it an opportunity to re-recognize the value and role of plants.
In the study of ‘Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures’(大乘經典) and ‘Mahāyāna historical material’(大乘史書)『Samgukyusa』, plants are represented in various ways as metaphor and symbol.
This study was conducted through several processes.
In chapter Ⅱ, I summarized the plants recorded in the representative Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures 『Āvataṃsaka sūtra』(華嚴經), 『Saddharmapuṇḍarīka sūtra』(法華經), 『Mahāparinirvāṇa sūtra』(涅槃經) and Mahāyāna historical material 『Samgukyusa』(三國遺事)' by plants and scriptures order. The plants are recorded 97 times 35 species in 『Āvataṃsaka sūtra』(華嚴經), 62 times 27 species in 『Saddharmapuṇḍarīka sūtra』(法華經), and 210 times 79 species in 『Mahāparinirvāṇa sūtra』(涅槃經), and 119 times 56 species in 『Samgukyusa』(三國遺事). The total number of species included in the study was 122.
In Chapter III, major plants were divided into woody plant and herb first, to help understand the plants included in the study. And the role of plants was divided into three parts: religious sanctification, implication of doctrine, and means of majesty. In addition, the theoretical basis for deriving view of plants was presented by exploring the theories of 'View of nature' (自然觀) and 'Recognition of Buddha nature'(佛性認識) in Mahāyāna Buddhism(大乘佛敎).
In chapter Ⅳ, I derived the view of recognizing plants in each scriptures and historical materials by researching the examples and meanings of important plants representing 'The intent'(宗趣). In other words, through chapter 3 and chapter 4, I have organized the 'View of plant in the Mahāyāna Buddhism'(大乘佛敎의 植物觀) by individual plants, scriptures and historical material.
In Chapter Ⅴ, I organized the meaning of the 'View of plant study' in two aspects, such as the aspect of making re-recognizing Buddhist values possible and the aspect of making re-establishing the future-oriented View of plant possible.
In conclusion, it is possible to recognize plants as not simply 'biological beings', but could be perceived as 'the beings including the intent of each 'Mahāyāna Buddhism Literature'(大乘佛典).
Previously, the roles of plants are classified into three parts: religious sanctification, implication of doctrine, and means of majesty. However, whichever role plants belong to, the plants have revealed the content and meaning of the scriptures more clearly. Moreover, by exploring the Buddhist meaning of plants, it is possible to recognize the botanical reason why the plants are included in the Buddhist scriptures.
In 『Āvataṃsaka sūtra』(華嚴經), 'Lotus' was 'Buddha' and 'Dharma' itself and 'Sacred Bo tree' was the concept of 'Dharma' which is shaped by 'Lotus'. The Sutra explains the Buddha who gains enlightenment through the 'World of the Lotus Sanctuary '(蓮華藏世界), which symbolizes the lotus flower and explains the 'World of the Lotus Sanctuary '(蓮華藏世界) revealed by that wisdom. The lotus is a magnificent element of the world and contains doctrine in the flower itself. Also, 'sacred bo-tree' is an element that conceptualizes the world shaped by lotus.
In 『Saddharmapuṇḍarīka sūtra』(法華經), 'Lotus' was the being that projects 'Buddha's teachings', and the Heavenly flowers(天華, 天花) was described as 'Retribution'(果報) given to the ‘Bodhisattva’(菩薩) who fulfills the 'Buddha's teachings'. The ultimate goal of this sutra is to understand and practice the teachings of the sutra, and to implement the Buddhist world like the lotus. I would also like to convey the virtue to the practitioner of the Buddhist Retribution(果報) in the name of 'Heavenly flower'.
In 『Mahāparinirvāṇa sūtra』(涅槃經), 'Lotus' means "the realization of 'Pure land'(淨土)" and 'Sal tree' is described as the being that enables ‘nirvāṇa’(涅槃) which is realized as 'Pure land' so they served as the intent of this sutra. In this scripture, nirvāṇa (nirvana) is called nitya-sukha-ātman-śubha(常樂我靜), because the ‘Buddha-kāya’(佛身) is residing in. At the center of this nitya-sukha-ātman-śubha(常樂我靜), there is a tree of 'nirvāṇa’(涅槃) . The Sutra tells us that Sal tree is nitya-sukha
-ātman-śubha itself, and it is realized in the Sal tree.
In 『Samgukyusa』(三國遺事), through 'Lotus' and 'Bamboo', each represented the ideal and reality. 'Lotus' is the 'Mindfull Pure land'(唯心淨土) itself and 'Bamboo' represents the spirit of Silla that enable 'Mindfull Pure land'(唯心淨土). The Silla people were aware that in the Buddhist afterlife view, the 'svabhāva of sattva'(衆生의 自性) was the ‘Amitābha’(阿彌陀佛) itself and the mind was ‘Pure Land’(淨土) itself. For them, the lotus and bamboo are the existence of projecting the afterlife and this life.
In ‘Mahāyāna Buddhist scriptures’(大乘經典) and ‘Mahāyāna historical material’(大乘史書), plants were described as the enlightenment which portrayed human being’s thought. The reason why plants can be meaningful elements in these Mahāyāna Buddhism scriptures and Mahāyāna historical material is due to the argument of Mahāyāna Buddhism(大乘佛敎) based on original equality and interdependence of all beings.
Studying the ‘View of plant in the Mahayana Buddhism Literature’(大乘佛典의 植物觀) is a way of interpreting the scriptures by the botanical point of view, based on the Mahāyāna Buddhism argument.
And ultimately, this research is to find out what role the ‘View of plant in the Mahayana Buddhism’(大乘佛敎의 植物觀) can perform in the Buddhist ideals based on life-oriented idea and future-oriented ecological awareness.
