The folk sport is created by certain masses in specific time and space. It is inherited and used by certain masses. Besides, it is incorporated into and depends on the collectivism and pattern among the masses’ daily living habits. It is one sports event or activity that has typical, inherited, transmitting, non-official and informal characteristics. Korea and China are neighboring countries in East Asia, which have carried out frequent exchanges since ancient times. Especially the Korean traditional culture and agricultural civilization are influenced by the Chinese traditional culture. Therefore, these two countries’ folk cultures represent certain similarities in terms of the form, contents and cultural connotations. The culturology is a science related to culture, which researches the objective laws of the whole humanity and each national culture’s progress, as well as the heritage, phenomena and events of humans’ material and spiritual.
Korean “tug of war” and Chinese “dragon-boat racing” are respectively the important folk cultures and sports of these two countries. As folk cultural heritages, both countries’ masses will hold folk ceremony activities, in which a large number of sacrificing rituals and sports competitiveness elements are incorporated. These activities of folk ceremony cultures respectively represent the traditional cultures and connotations of these two countries and reflect the differences between these two countries in terms of material, system and spiritual levels. From April 7th to April 10th 2016, the author of this paper participated into the tug of war folk ceremony held by Gicisi and Chungcheongnam-do in South Korea; the author also took part in the whole process of the Mid-Autumn traditional dragon-boat racing activity in Huangxikou, Dajiangkou and Pushi in Chinese Yuanshui watershed on lunar May 5th 2016. With the qualitative research methods, including the field study method, in-depth interview and participatory observation, the author carries out comparative research on the “tug of war” and “dragon-boat racing” in terms of ritual behaviors and cultural connotations. By analyzing the cultural anthropology and folklore theories, the author analyzes the factors and reasons that influence these activities’ differences. Based on this, the author also carries out further discussions of the differences between Korean and Chinese folk sports cultures and the relations between these two countries’ traditional cultures.
The research conclusions of this paper are as follows:
Forstly, there is no concept of “folk sports” in Korean sports theories. Therefore, the author proposes the concept of Korean “folk sports”, namely the sports activity projects and the collective folk cultures that have regional, modular and inherited characteristics and are created by Korean people according to the regional culture and custom habits in specific time, space and regions, as well as based on the masses’ daily life, holidays and cultures.
Secondly. Gijisi’s tug war folk ceremony and Yuanshui watershed’s Mid-autumn dragon-boat folk celebration both need to undergo the ritual process that is very complicated and has a long spatial range. In the ritual process, ritual behaviors that have rich connotations and symbolic significance are carried out, which represent the folk cultural connotations of these two countries.
However, there are differences between these two sports events in terms of the folk ceremony ritual process and cultural connotations:
Firstly, they have different ceremony ritual processes. Gijixi’s tug war ceremony is one annual-divination ritual related to the the agricultural civilization. It mainly endows the tug war rope with sacredness by worshiping the rope. Through the tug war’s ritual process, it predicts the agricultural harvest. The ceremony celebration process fully represents the three-phase characteristics of transitional ritual model, which was proposed by Arnold van Gennep: separation, marginalization and aggregation. The Mid-autumn dragon-boat racing ceremony of Yuanshui watershed needs to worship ancestors and the dragon’s head, making the dragon-boat sacred and increasing people’s spirit of worshiping the dragon totem and their miss for ancestors. The dragon-boat racing is a part of the Mid-autumn ceremony and a derivative of the Mid-autumn celebrating activity. The celebration process cannot represent the characteristics of Arnold Van Genne’s marginal ritual and the transitional ritual model.
Secondly, they have different ceremony ritual structures. Gijisi’s tug war ceremony is the structure system that spreads centering on the folk ceremony. It represents the characteristics of cultural identity, insiders and completeness; however, the dragon-boat racing folk ceremony of Yuanshui watershed is the structural system that aggregates internally by centering on the Mid-autumn folk ceremony. It represents the characteristics of national identity, outsiders and decentralization. The differences between these two also represent the differences between Korean and Chinese traditional cultural structures.
Moreover, they have different ceremonial & ritual cultural connotations. Gijisi’s tug war folk ceremony represents the Korean folk thinking of taking about spirits, wizards, imperishable spirit, fertility worship, respecting hugeness, worshiping ancestors and valuing farmers. It also represents the oceanic cultural spirit of cooperation and competitiveness. Influenced by the cultures of regional rivers, mountainous land and regions, the Huangxikou, Dajiangkou and Pushi in Yuanshui watershed reflect the worshiping of this region’s ancestors, the primitive religion of natural worship to objects and the wizard culture. It also represents the characteristics of wizardry, religions and symbolism. Moreover, it is the product of ancient farming culture.
Thirdly, The Korean tug of war and Chinese dragon-boat racing are both ancient and young PE sports events. Although their sports forms are completely different, they are both carried out widely among the masses in both countries. In terms of the social PE level, they can improve the participator’s physical and health qualities, enhance the national confidence and pride, entertain the body and heart, alleviate the negative influences brought by modern competitive society to humans’ hearts and bodies and promote communications & cooperation. On the level of school sports, they can meet the school sports’ educational aim and requirement of being educational, healthy, competitive and cooperative. Among them, the tug war is more suitable for being carried out in the school sports; the dragon-boat race is strictly required by the site and facilities. It is unsuitable for being carried out in the school’s sports class teaching. On the level of the competitive sports, they both can fully represent the modern Olympic spirit of “Swifter, Higher and Stronger”. As world competitive sports projects, they both have professional sports team & competitive race.
Fourthly, as the folk cultures and folk sports of both countries, the Korean traditional tug of war and Chinese Mid-autumn dragon-boat racing are both humans’ intangible cultural heritages. At present, they have been effectively protected and developed by both countries’ governments and folk societies. Seen from the overall situation, however, Korean efforts for protecting the tug war custom are bigger than Chinese protection for the traditional dragon-boat racing. The means of protecting the tug war custom are also more diversified and attach a bigger emphasis over the tug war folk culture’s overall protection.
