The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of self-determinated motivation and academic emotions on self-regulated learning, prove the importance of learners' motivation and emotions in learning situations, identify the mediating effect of academic emotions. A survey was conducted in 240 tenth-graders in Ulsan and a total of 234 questionnaires were analyzed, with the exception of 6 copies containing insincere responses or missing values. Three instruments were used to measure self-determinated motivation, academic emotions and self-regulated learning. The collected data were statistically processed using SPSS18.0K and descriptive statistics was used to assess the learners' characteristics. Correlation analysis was performed to see inter-variable relations and multiple regression analysis was used to determine the effects of self-determinated motivation and academic emotions on self-regulated learning. Sobel test was used to determine the mediating effect of academic emotions on the effects of self-determinated motivation on self-regulated learning and hierarchical regression analysis was performed.
The results of this study are as follows:
First, descriptive statistics found that for self-determinated motivation, identified regulation got the highest mean and the mean of introjected regulation was at a similar level. The mean was higher for positive academic emotions than for negative ones and anxiety got the highest mean among all the sub-factors of academic emotions. For self-regulated learning, monitoring was found to be the most frequently used strategy.
Second, significant positive correlation was mostly found between self-determinated motivation, academic emotions, and self-regulated learning. Amotivation and external regulation were negatively correlated with all the sub-factors of self-regulated learning and introjected regulation, identified regulation, integrated regulation, and internal regulation were all positively correlated with self-regulated learning.
Third, as for the effects of self-determinated motivation and academic emotions on self-regulated learning, amotivation commonly negatively affected self-regulated learning. Both positive and negative emotions affected the area of motivation in self-regulated learning and only positive emotions affected the areas of meta-cognition and learning strategies.
Fourth, as for the mediating effect of academic emotions on the effects of self-determinated motivation on self-regulated learning, only the mediating effect of positive emotions was proved.
In conclusion, self-determinated motivation, which significantly affects self-regulated learning, needs to be considered important and learners may more effectively use self-regulated learning strategies together with emotional intervention in learning situations to improve self-determination. In particular, as positive emotions were found to be significant variables to use self-regulated learning well, it is necessary to make a plan to apply them to learning situations in addition to the efforts at school and at home.
