The purpose of this study was to examine child care teacher’s perception and reality of nuri course-linked personality education and then provide basic information on the reality of early childhood personality education and the establishment of guidelines.
Study subjects were 279 teachers (152 teachers at child care centers and 127 teachers at kindergartens in Seoul and K Province). In order to examine child care teacher’s perception and reality of nuri course-linked personality education, a questionnaire was developed. The questionnaire, a study tool of this study, consisted of 31 items: 7 items, related to teacher’s personal data and educational agency’s characteristics; 6 items, related to the compositional direction of nuri course and the perception of personality education; 5 items, related to the contents of nuri course and the perception of personality education; and 13 items on the nuri course-linked reality of personality education. The developed questionnaire was distributed to child care teachers over the period from July 8 to 29, 2013, thus collecting study data. The collect rate of questionnaire was 94%.
Following study questions were established;
Study question 1. ‘what is child care teacher’s perception of nuri course-linked personality education?’
Study question 2 ‘what is the reality of nuri course-linked personality education?’
Collected data were analyzed with the SPSS 20.0 statistical program and such analytic techniques as frequency, percentage, chi-square, t-test for the verification of group difference, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe test for post hoc test were carried out.
Study findings are as follows:
First, as for child care teacher’s perception of nuri course-linked personality education, they perceived the level of compositional direction of nuri course as ordinary in general and the number of class of educational agencies for which child care teachers working had significant influence upon it. Child care teachers perceived nuri course-linked personality education as above average in general and their academic background had significant influence upon it. Child care teachers perceived their understanding of nuri course-linked emphasis on the education of creativeness and personality as ordinary and above in general and their academic background had significant influence upon it. Child care teachers regarded ‘their perception of nuri course-linked necessity of personality education’ as ordinary and above in general and their academic background had significant influence upon it. Child care teachers regarded ‘their perception of correct behavior model’ as ordinary in general and their academic background had significant influence upon it. When they established a plan of nuri course-linked personality education, child care teachers attached greatest importance to such personality virtues as manners in the area of lifestyle, consideration in the area of social emotion, and honesty in the area of ethics and morality. As to child care teacher’s perception of ‘expected growth image of young children through nuri course-linked personality education,’ they regarded ‘other-consideration sympathy’ as most important. Child care teacher’s perception was different by the types of educational agencies, and teachers at child care centers perceived ‘positive discernment and acceptance of diversity’ and ‘productivity and creativity based on cooperation with others’ as important, whereas teachers at kindergartens perceived ‘formation of basic lifestyle’ as important. As to child care teacher’s perception of ‘things that had to be considered to fulfill nuri course-linked personality education faithfully,’ most of them responded with ‘the reduction of number of children in a class’ and the size of educational agencies had significant influence upon it.
Second, as for the reality of nuri course-linked personality education, ‘the degree of execution of nuri course-linked personality education’ was ordinary and child care teacher’s academic background and teaching career had significant influence upon it. Regarding ‘the degree of reflecting the establishment of a nuri course-linked activity onto the element of personality education’, they ‘always did so’ and teacher’s age had significant influence upon it. As to the reality of ‘preparing materials to plan and execute nuri course-linked personality education,’ they most frequently used ‘data published by government and child care teacher’s academic background had significant influence upon it. As to the reality of ‘teaching method to execute nuri course-linked personality education,’ most of them answered with ‘carrying out life theme-linked personality education.’ As to the reality of ‘assessment method to evaluate the degree of nuri course-linked personality development,’ most of them applied ‘observational assessment’ in general and it was significantly influenced by the type and size of educational agencies and the major of child care teachers.
The findings of this study on child care teacher’s perception and reality of nuri course-linked personality education seem to increase the degree of understanding of nuri course-linked personality education, and provide significant basic information on the reality of personality education and the development of guidelines for effective personality education.
