『대한자강회월보』 연구 : 근대 법, 역사 개념과 문예 개념의 관련을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문의 목적은 『대한자강회월보(大韓自彊會月報, 1906.7~1907.7)』에 실린 정치·법률, 역사, 그리고 문학 관련 기사를 개념사적 방법론을 통해 연구함으로써, 계몽기의 문학 및 문예의 개념을 정치적 목적과 연관해 분석해보는 데 있다. 특히 문학 및 문예의 개념을 용례를 통해 분석함으로써 당시에 각 개념이 어떻게 정의되고 있었는지를 살펴보고, 수록된 관련 논설과 작품을 분석함으로써 언문소설과 한문소설에 대한 가치평가를 ‘민지(民智)’의 개발이라는 측면에서 분석하고자 한다.
본고에서는 라인하르트 코젤렉(Reinhart Koselleck)과 롤프 라이하르트(Rolf Reichhardt)의 개념사(槪念史) 연구 방법론을 통해 계몽기의 지식 개념의 수용, 굴절 및 변용을 알아보려 했다. 코젤렉이 제시한 기대지평(期待地平)과 경험공간(經驗空間)을 분석의 기본적인 도구로 두고, 라이하르트의 ‘중간개념’을 차용하여 생활 속에서 힘을 발휘하던 주요 개념들을 살펴보고자 했다.
법학·정치학과 관련해서는 특히 공민(公民) 및 자치제도에 주목하였는데, 대한자강회의 주요 인물이었던 오가키 다케오(大垣丈夫), 윤효정(尹孝定)의 논설과 연설을 분석하였다. 이를 통해 이들이 ‘자유’와 ‘민권’의 개념을 기대지평으로 삼고 있으면서도 유학(儒學)이라는 경험공간에 의거하여 설명하려 했던 것을 알 수 있었다. 이 과정에서 혁명과 개혁에 비대칭적인 가치가 부여되고 있음 또한 알 수 있었다.
역사학과 지리학 분야에서는 시간·공간의 차원에서 역사를 서술할 필요가 있었다. 근대 네이션(nation)의 번역어가 ‘민족’과 ‘국가’로 각기 나뉘어지는 상황 속에서 시간에 기반한 ‘민족’의 역사가 쓰여지는 동시에, 공간에 기반한 ‘국가’ 내지 ‘지역’의 관점에서의 역사 또한 서술되었던 것이다. 장지연(張志淵)이 경사적(經史的) 경험에 의거한 ‘민족’의 역사를, 현은(玄檃)이 중인 계급으로서의 경험을 살린 ‘지역’의 역사를 서술한 것은 이러한 맥락에서 이해해야 한다. 그러나 서구의 근대화된 ‘문명’을 기대지평으로 두고 서술되었던 ‘민족’의 역사는 현재에 이르기까지 서술되지 못하고 중단되고 만다. 그것은 ‘민족’이 서구에 버금가는 찬란한 문화를 가진 존재로 소환되었지만, 경험공간과의 괴리를 무시할 수는 없었기 때문이다. 그리고 이러한 시간적 서술의 파탄은 실제적으로 경험하고 있는 공간, 즉 행정구역에 기반한 역사를 재서술하게 만든다.
또한 전통적 의미에서의 ‘문(文)’이 ‘문예(文藝)’로 변화해가는 과정에서, 문예라는 새로운 어휘가 사용되기는 했지만 여전히 전통적 문(文) 개념에 기반하여 문장을 이해했음을 알 수 있었다. 그렇기 때문에 ‘언문소설’은 가치가 떨어지는 것으로 생각되었고, 기존에 있던 문집이나 소화(笑話) 등을 문원 내지 소설란에 실었으며 한시를 통한 호소 및 그 형식을 따른 감정의 술회가 일반적으로 나타나게 되었다. 이러한 문장의 전범 내지는 표상으로 박지원(朴趾源)이 소환되고 있으며, 고전이 만들어지는 과정에서 국민의 정서가 가장 중요한 문제였음을 알 수 있다. 결국 이것은 국민의 정서를 통일시켜 국가를 건설하는 데 이바지하도록 애국심을 길러야 한다는 정치 논설로 환원되었다.
즉 『대한자강회월보』의 기사들은 정치와 역사, 문학이라는 세 분과가 서로 긴밀하게 연관된 상태임을 보여주고 있으며, 근대국가의 건설이라는 목적성 하에서 각 개념은 특히 ‘정치’에 긴박된 형태로 존재하고 있었음을 알 수 있다.
