Jujaseojeolyo(朱子書節要, The Abbreviated Essence of Master Zhu Xi's Letters) is one of the most important works written by Toegye(退溪) Lee Hwang(李滉). Toegye had devoted himself a large part of his life to compiling this book, which later became an essential text book to understand Neo-Confucianism during the Joseon Dynasty. It was in 1543 when Zhuzidaquan(朱子大全, The Collected Works of Master Zhu Xi) was first published during the Joseon period. The publication of such a book happened, however, 150 years after the foundation of the Joseon Dynasty, whose basic philosophy for its nation-building was based upon the principles of Neo-Confucianism. In 1546, three years after the publication of Zhuzidaquan, Toegye retired from his civil servant's post, and started to concentrate all of his efforts on reading and research for this book. Toegye focused his study and research, in particular, on letters of Zhu Xi(朱熹), in which he found very rich resources of Zhu Xi's academic insight and legacy. Toegye selected the most important parts of letters which he found possible to be practically applied to the real lives of people. Such an attempt was made possible because Toegye thought that the publication of this book was a prerequisite for the understanding of Neo-Confucianism as well as for the benefit of anyone interested in a life-long study of it. Out of the total of 2,365 letters written by Zhu Xi, Toeygye selected 1,234 letters that comprise almost a half of it. Once again, however, Toegye extracted the most important parts out of the selected letters to highlight the real picture of Zhu Xi as a Confucian scholar.
Those selected collection of the letters were again transcribed by a group of Toeygye's pupils. After that, they did six or seven proofreadings and corrections. The notes works, which were elicited from Toegye's reading and studying about the book, were reflected in the publication of its continued serial editions. For example, the first edition called the “Seongju Edition(星州本)” took the majority of its pages only to deal with the special notes on 'Who's Who' while the fourth edition called the “Jeongju Edition(定州本)”, however, assigned its main spaces for the explanatory notes to explain about 'difficult phrases to understand', 'sources', and 'situation'. Such a development of editing style represents how the progress of the study on Zhu Xi's letters had evolved and deepened by change of time. Moreover, the Jeongju Edition was enlarged to include Jejamokrok(諸子目錄, Compendium of Who's Who). Later on, the enlarged and re-edited edition was called Hoeamseojeolyo(晦菴書節要) and finally it became Jujaseojeolyo.
Jujaseojeolyo had been published four times during the life time of Toegye. Since 1561, when Hwang Joon Ryang(黃俊良) had first published in Seongju(星州) in the form of 15 fascicles and eight volumes, Lyu Joong Young(柳仲郢) also published an edition of the book in 1565 at Haeju(海州) and later again another edition in 1567 at Jeongju(定州). Between the period of those two publications, Jeong Jong Young(鄭宗榮) published the book in 1566 in Pyongyang(平壤). The two editions of Haeju and Pyongyang were published independently without Toegye's personal involvement, and therefore, there was found no difference from Seongju Edition. However, many supplementary enlargements were made at the time of publishing Jeongju Edition which became available in wooden block printing and was widely spread to the Pyongyang area. In 1575 after the death of Toegye, Jeong goo(鄭逑) reedited and published the same book in 20 fascicles and 10 volumes at the Cheongok Seowon(川谷書院) located at Seongju. All of the editions printed on later stages followed the same version of Cheongok Seowon Edition.
Right after its publication, Jujaseojeolyo started to be adapted as an introductory guidebook for Neo-Confucianism. Later on, it was treated as a book of the same value as those text books like Saseosamkyeong(四書三經, the Four Books and the Three Classics), Xiaoxue(小學, The Minor Learning), Xinjing(心經, Classic of Mind), and Jinsilu(近思錄, Reflections on Things on Hand). Finally it became one of the main text books taught at various educational institutions, public and private, such as Kyungyeon(經筵, a kind of royal academy), Hyanggyo(鄕校, village school), Seowon(書院, private institution), and Seojae(書齋, private school). Accordingly, it could be said that the editing and publication of Jujaseojeolyo was an important process through which Toegye was working hard to make the book a main scripture for an easy understanding of Neo-Confucianism.
Thanks to the publication of Jujaseojeolyo more and more researches related to Neo-Confucianism were activated during the period of the Joseon Dynasty while various kinds of annotated or reference books were edited and published to support and promote Jujaseojeolyo as well as Zhuzidaquan In addition to Zhu Xi's letters, many other Zhu Xi's writings were also published according to Toegye’s selecting and editing style. In the earlier days, the role of the letters had not been properly appreciated in the field of the collected literary works. The circle of academicians, however, gradually started to recognize the importance of letters for the effective communication of their knowledge and information. Finally letters were eventually accepted as an independent and important element to help construct the making of collected literary works.
