The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of cooperative art activities upon the improvement of artistic expressivity and happiness of young children in their 5 years of age. Since young children’s cooperative art activity is an important factor that has influence upon their artistic expressivity and happiness, this study on cooperative art activities for the young children’s whole-person development is seemingly very meaningful. On this account, study questions were established as follows:
First, ‘What is the correlation between cooperative art activities and the improvement of young children’s artistic expressivity and happiness?’
Second, ‘What influence do cooperative art activities have upon the improvement of young children’s artistic expressivity and happiness?’
Study subjects were 100 young children in P and A Child Care Center in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul. In the course of carrying out experiment, 35 children (16 from the experiment group and 19 from the control group) dropped out and the data of 65 children were used in study analysis. The reason of dropout was not participating in either pretest or posttest even once, or not participating in art activities more than twice. Their data after the post-test were excluded from analysis.
As for the methods of data analysis, the non-equivalent control; group pretest-posttest design (Lee Jong-seung, 1989) was used in the design of experiment, and t-test was carried out as a pretest by dividing study subjects into an experiment group and a control group. The experiment group carried out cooperative art activities, whereas the control group carried out non-cooperative art activities. After experiment, posttest of both groups was carried out and the extent of change was comparatively analyzed.
First, in order to examine the influence of cooperative art activities upon the improvement of artistic expressivity of 5-year old children, the scores of pretest and posttest of artistic expressivity were compared between the experiment group and the control group. Study findings are as follows:
The result of analysis on the data of such factors of artistic expressivity as creativity, image expression, expressive ability and activity process showed that the score of the control group was higher than that of the experiment group in pretest, whereas the score of creativity of the experiment group was higher than that of the control group in posttest. And the difference of scores was statistically significant. In other words, comparing to non-cooperative art activities, cooperative art activities were effective in the improvement of such sub-variables of artistic expressivity as creativity, image expression, expressive ability and activity process.
Second, in order to examine the influence of cooperative art activities upon the improvement of happiness of 5-year old children, the scores of pretest and posttest of happiness were compared between the experiment group and the control group. Study findings are as follows:
The result of analysis on the data of such factors of happiness as commitment, spirituality, health score, peer relations, teacher relations, cognition and performance, emotion, parent relations and life satisfaction showed that there was no difference in the score of pretest between both groups, whereas the score of the experiment group was higher than that of the control group in posttest. In other words, comparing to non-cooperative art activities, cooperative art activities were effective in the improvement of such sub-variables of happiness as commitment, spirituality, peer relations, teacher relations, cognition and performance, and emotion. However, in health score, parent relations and life satisfaction, there was no significant difference between both activities.
