The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of Self-Regulated Learning Program(SRLP) on the learning strategies and academic motivation among elementary school underachievers.
The research questions of this study were as follows.
First, does SRLP enhance the learning strategies of elementary school underachievers?
Second, does SRLP enhance the academic motivation of elementary school underachievers?
The study was conducted with a pre-test and post-test experimental design. The subjects in this study were 30 sixth grade underachievers from two elementary schools located in Busan. Experiment group(n=14) were sampled from M elementary school, and control group(n=16) were sampled from D elementary school.
The subjects of experiment group were trained with SRLP for 10 weeks. SRLP consisted of cognition, motivation, and behavior scopes and contains both individual and group activities for improving underachievers’ learning strategies and academic motivation.
The measurements were Assessment of Learning Strategies for Adolescents(ALSA) and Academic Motivation Tests. To analyze the data, an ANCOVA was adopted.
The results of this study were as follows.
First, the experimental group who had participated in SRLP showed significantly higher improvement in learning strategies than the control group. Second, the experimental group who had participated in SRLP didn't show any improvement in academic motivation compared to the control group.
In conclusion, SRLP had positive effect on the learning strategies of elementary school underachievers, but didn't have positive effect on the academic motivation of elementary school underachievers.
