The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effect of perceived social support in the relationships between Optimism and Social Adjustment of children. The subjects of this research were 562 of elementary school students in grades 5 through 6 in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. They were assessed by The children's Life Orientation Test-Revised, Social Support Appraisal Scale-Revised, School-related Adjustment Scale-Revised.
The statistical analysis program(SPSS) was used for analyzing the collected data from the research in correlation, simple regression, multiple regression analysis. To examine mediating effect of perceived social support on the relationships between children's Optimism and school adjustment, Baron and Kenny(1986) model was used. Lastly, Sobel's(1982)test was used to verify mediation effect.
The results were as follows:
First, children's optimism had a significant effects on school adjustment.
Second, the total score of social support perceived by children, friend's support, family's support and teacher's support had a significant effects on school adjustment.
Third, children's optimism had a significant effects on total score of social support perceived by children and friend's support, family's support, teacher's support.
Finally, the total score of social support perceived by children mediated partly the relationships between children's optimism and school adjustment. Subfactors of social support perceived by children, friend's support, family's support and teacher's support mediated partly the relationships between children's optimism and school adjustment.
This study was confirmed the mediating effects of perceived social support and subfactors in the relationships between optimism and school adjustment of children.
