This study examines the relationship between parental intelligence and irrational beliefs of infancy child’s mother, and explores the factors of irrational beliefs such as development stimulating role, parenting role, administrative role of parents.
For this study, 237 mothers with child of age 3~5 who attends preschool or day care center in the Seoul, Gyeonggi and Busan area were surveyed and the results were analyzed.
In order to identify the demographic characteristics of the sample group, survey was conducted. Also, for investigating irrational beliefs of parent, based on methodologies referenced from Personal Beliefs. Inventory by Hartwan(1986), Rationality Scaie by Ellis(1973), Adult Irrational Idea Inventory by Fox and Davis(1971), and Test of Irrational Idea by Plutchik(1976), ‘Survey on Personal Beliefs’ by Park(1981), which was appropriately adjusted to fit our culture.
The results of this study are following:
First, irrational belief of parent and parental intelligence showed negative correlation.
Second, sub-categories of parents’irrational beliefs such as emotional irresponsibility, problem avoidance and frustrative reaction showed negative correlations with development stimulating role. Also, parents’tendency to be highly concerned for others seemed to stimulate development stimulating role.
Third, sub-categories of parents’ irrational beliefs such as problem avoidance and emotional irresponsibility showed negative correlations with parenting role.
Forth, sub-categories of parents’irrational beliefs such as ineffectualness and desire for recognition showed negative correlation with administrative role, while tendency to be highly concerned for others showed static effecton administrative role.
Based on results of the study, one can conclude the following:
Strongly irrational belief negatively affects parental intelligence. The higher irrationalbelief of parents, more difficult the parenting becomes. Therefore, for effective parenting, it is necessary for parents to explore their own irrational beliefs.
