Juveniles with internet addiction try to fill cyber space with basic desire not satisfied with reality by being absorbed in internet cyber space. On the other hand, they have low self efficacy by losing their confidence in reality and feeling anxiety for personal relations.
The purpose of the study was to examine an effect of music therapy with pop music on improving self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction. To achieve the purpose, the study examined change in scores of self efficacy and changes in reaction related to self efficacy within music activities before/after carrying out music therapy with pop music for juveniles with internet addiction.
The study was carried out with 9 juveniles excluding two juveniles who were absent more than three times out of 11 juveniles belonging to a dangerous user group and a warning user group in the internet addiction observer index that an officer of Gyeongju A Youth Center drew up and self diagnose index (NIA, 2008) out of juveniles who attended Gyeongju A Youth Center.
Music therapy program was composed of stage 1 for motivation through activities by assignment difficulty and formation of affirmative relations between a therapist and group members (session 1~3), stage 2 to improve self control ability by checking internal introspection and mental problem based on music therapy (session 4~7) and stage 3 to acquire confidence through performing the given assignment and affirmative feedback from others (session 8~10).
First, the study progressed music therapy in a group form of total 10 sessions by 50 minutes per one session at A Youth Center, carried out pre test of self efficacy before carrying out music therapy to examine how much self efficacy was improved after carrying out music therapy than before carrying out music therapy and examined changes in their level of self efficacy before/after music therapy program was carried out by carrying out self efficacy measure test after each session was completed. To be so, the study used Kim Ah-Young’s self efficacy measure (1997) and carried out data process with SPSS 19.0 in significant level .05.
Second, as for their music reactions within music therapy, the study analyzed whether there were changes in musical behaviors by each session related to self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction through video photographing and observation records with Kim Sun-Mi’s musical behavior measure evaluation sheet (2004).
The results of the study were as follows.
First, to examine whether there were differences in scores of self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction between before and after applying music therapy, the study examined changes in scores of self efficacy measure through musical activities based on each factor by classifying self efficacy which might be operated as a factor of juveniles with internet addiction into three sub factors- assignment difficulty preference, self control ability and confidence. As a result, they had each difference a little, but scores after music therapy than before music therapy were largely increased over all. Namely, music therapy had an effect on self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction.
Second, the study examined changes in musical behaviors by each session related to self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction through music therapy. As a result, they had differences in scores by each session, but all of them had increased scores in the final session 10 than in the first session 1. Namely, the study could see that juveniles with internet addiction could improve their self efficacy by performing assignments by each difficulty within musical activities, controlling their emotion and getting confidence through music therapy program related to assignment difficulty, self control ability and confidence.
The above research results imply that music therapy program with pop music is efficient in improving self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction and music therapy can be a therapy tool to give a help in improving low self efficacy of juveniles with internet addiction. Therefore, it is necessary to make a support and system to apply music therapy program to consultation and therapy field for juveniles with internet addiction in the future.
