Modern cities have integrated functionally with spatial expansion of
economic activity since globalization. Moreover, port cities which had
been depressed by losing city power with cultural and social changes
of cities are interested in waterfront as a new space which has a
possibility of performing various demands of fast-changing cities.
Therefore, in this study, the collision of complex functions, citizen’s
demands of using waterfront and the changing pattern of urban
waterfront trying to revitalize as a center space, not an edge of a city,
is named as the Soft Waterfront. The purpose of the study is analyzing the Soft Waterfront’s characteristic of mixed diverse
    functions.
    1. It is found that, in the soft urbanism of post-industrial society,
there are interactive, plural and organic relation between existing
environments, such as cities, cultures and societies, and humans
through comparing hard urbanism of industrial society and soft
urbanism of post-industrial society. Furthermore, the soft urbanism
means a city shape that has various urban experiences based on
cultural sense and symbolic richness to integral multi-function of
diverse cities in only one city.
    2. The prototype of the Soft Waterfront which has a symbolic
richness of integrated urban functions is able to be found in the case
of historic waterfront cities such as Ostia of Ancient Rome,
Amsterdam and Venice. In the study, various functional combinations
are also drew, for example symbolic gateway landscape, building
arrangements as landmark status, functions for living and industry,
flowing spaces of human and supplies, formation of a promenade for
citizen to ease access, and residential or resting area of citizen.
    3. Symbolic poverty of modern urban landscape is found in
abandoned industrial-waterfront and the new way for changing of
derelict spaces is started in the beginning form of soft waterfront.
Since 1960s, abandoned large-scale waterfront areas have been progressing various methods to revitalize the old downtown and
reinforce relationships between ports and cities.
    4. Waterfront which was made or revitalized after 1960s is able to
be explained with various characteristics of Soft Waterfront such as a
soft function leading diversification and complexness, a soft edge
considering familiar access between water, city, and human, a soft
form responding to water space and preservation of past buildings,
and a soft image of symbolic landscape through buildings in landmark
    status.
The regeneration of decrepit and declined areas caused by industrial
facilities relocation in waterfront areas is in progress, but there is a
few to do systematically with clear directivity in Korea. This study
suggests the meaning and the development direction of (re)developed
    waterfront area.
