This thesis proposes a theoretical framework for a new contextualism in architecture. In architectural discourse, contextualism has regarded as an alternative to solve the problems of modern architecture. However, it has not been presented as the definite concept or practical method of the contextualism. It has been unjustly treated as an anti-modern architecture.
But such an one-sided view, modern architecture or anti-modern architecture, is not the terms of settlement. Not only a radical contextualism but also modern architectural value must be colligated for the practical contextual architecture.
This research, to overcome these problems, presented a new contextualism in architecture based on the philosophy of contextualism that is suggested by Stephen Pepper, and verify the hypotheses through the Aldo Rossi's and Louis Kahn's architecture and their concept of architectural design. To sum up, the following conclusions can be made: the contextual thought of architecture is not just an anti-modern architecture, it could incorporate the modernistic thought, and the incorporation is accomplished by the concept of repetition, in condition that the repetition implicates the difference, and reveals the original nature of architecture over the modern architectural value.
