The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which childcare teacher’s job satisfaction is related to Holland aptitude type, especially whether Social type that is centered on interpersonal relationships, affects childcare teacher’s job satisfaction. Under such purpose, four research questions were established, which are as follows. First, do vocational personality types based on Holland Aptitude Exploration Inventory correspond with childcare teachers’ vocational personality types? Second, how are vocational personality types based on Holland Aptitude Exploration Inventory related to childcare teachers’ job satisfaction? Third, does Social type, among Holland vocational personality types, affect job satisfaction of childcare teachers? Last, do socio-demographic variables show significant differences in childcare teachers’ job satisfaction?
The participants were 121 childcare teachers working in Chungnam province. The instruments in this study were Cho’s Job Satisfaction Scale (2005) which was based on Purdue Teacher Opinionaire, and Holland Aptitude Exploration Inventory standardized in Korea. Cho’s Job Satisfaction Scale (2005) consists of 38 items including 'relationship with director' (8 items), 'work environment and facilities' (10 items), 'childcare activities performance' (9 items), 'relationship with fellow teachers' (4 items) and 'salary and working condition' (7 items), and of 5 point Likert scale. The reliability of total score in this scale was .93 by Cronbach’ s α, and the reliability of the 5 sub-factors ranged from .63 to .94. Holland Aptitude Exploration Inventory consists of 52 items including 'Activity' (11 items), 'Personality' (10 items), 'Efficacy' (11 items), 'Value' (13 items), 'Job'(5 items) and 'Ability' (2 items). This inventory is divided into 6 aptitude personality types: Realistic(R), Investigative(I), Artistic(A), Social(S), Enterprising(E) and Conventional(C). The Data collection was carried out during 2009 childcare teachers’ summer in-service training. The collected data were analyzed by calculating the mean and the standard deviation, Pearson’s productive correlation coefficient and one-way ANOVA (F test), Duncan test as post hoc test. The reliability of job satisfaction scale was analyzed by internal consistency coefficient Cronbach’s α, and the validity of job satisfaction was analyzed by factor analysis. All the data was analyzed using SPSS PC program (17.0 version).
The results of this study were as follows. First, childcare teachers’ the average points of Social type (S) was the highest, while average points of Investigative type (I) was the lowest. Second, compared to Non-social type, Social type (S) exhibited higher average points in the childcare teachers’ job satisfaction total score and the sub-factors scores. However, such result was not statistically significant difference. Last, there were statistically significant differences in the childcare teachers’ job satisfaction by education level and marriage status among socio-demographic variables. Hence, comparatively, the childcare teachers who are married and a high school graduation demonstrated higher job satisfaction.
