한국 여자골프사 연구 = A Study on the history of Korea women's golf

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study is to investigate the historical background for outstanding achievements of Korean women’s golfers at the international arena. I have derived following conclusions by investigating the significant sport history of Korean women’s golf, and defining the key figure for why they became the powerful nation in golf.
First, the Korean elite women’s sports have begun after 1950s, and they have caught the public attention by winning medals at the domestic basketball competitions among girl’s high school and their foreign competition(1953∼1954), and at the Tokyo Asian Games(1958). After the foundation of the Girl’s Vocational Team, development policy for elite sports since 1960, and excellent game scores of Korean female athletes in foreign competition have certainly gave an opportunity for them to be recognized in the world, and established a groundwork for Korean elite women’s sports to make progress. Moreover, this appeased the existing perspective of the domestic discrimination between men and women, and gave an opportunity for women to become athletes, leaders, and administrator in various social positions. The consecutive success of Korean female athletes in foreign competition during 1990s∼2000s have gained great pubic interest for elite women’s sports, and this have strengthened the domestic position for elite women’s sports as well as transforming Korea to become powerful nation for women’s sports.
Second, negative perspective for golf was rampant in Korea for its historical background, which in that golf was first introduced by the Japanese Imperialists. Despite this fact, golf became recognized as designated sports in Korea since numerous golf courses were constructed in Seoul and various suburb areas, and foundation of golf competition along with the Chosun Golf League. Nevertheless the golf industry was temporarily frozen due to the WWII and the Korean War, they have reclaimed their position after the foundation of the Seoul Country Club. Especially, the Seoul Country Club was located at the center area of the main Korean golf course, and they have established the Korea Golf Association which later became the headquarter for Korean professional golfers, and foundation for golf to be recognized as Korean elite sports.
Third, the expansion stage of Korean women’s golf at their individual period and its’ significance in sport history is as follows:
1. 1950∼1969 is defined as the inception of Korean women’s golf which the distinction between professional and amateur golfers was obscured; however, establishment of several golf classes and clubs in college, and assembly of women’s association at the Seoul Country Club have promoted friendships among female members, while the significance was that they attempted to change the image of golf through participating in social volunteer activities.
2. 1970∼1989 is the period when Korean women’s golf have been developed and active, which established groundwork for them to be recognized as sports for private education institute due to the establishment of competitions by institutions related to golf have changed the age of amateur Korean women’s golfers from mid-age to teenagers. Furthermore, in 1978 the first Korean women’s golfer was born at the Republic of Korea; however, several athletes have departed for Japan because of the inferior domestic arena for women’s pro-golfers. Among them were Ok-Hee Ku, and her victory in JLPGA and USLPGA tour as a first Korean women’s golfer has established a basis for her to expand to the foreign arena.
3. 1990∼1999 was the period when domestic and foreign activities of Korean women’s golfers were prosperous, the rate of female junior golfers who have strong purpose to become successful pro-golfers has grown, and women’s pro-golfers have faced a great turning point due to the establishment of the KLPGA(Korea Ladies Professional Golf Association). The KLPGA has started to make qualitative improvements since efforts from KLPGA to invigorate the domestic female pro-golfers. Especially, grand victory of Se-Ri Pak at 1998 USPLGA tour has made a groundwork for domestic women’s golfers to join USLPGA, and it has significance in sports history since this has unequivocally invigorated the KLPGA and transformed golf into designated public sports.
4. 2000∼2010 is the period when Korean LPGA became globalized and Korea became recognized as a powerful nation in golf, which the significance is that amateur and professionals have made progress in both domestic and foreign arena. Influence of Se-Ri Pak has led to ‘Seri Kids’, which they have contributed in promoting the KLPGA to become unrivaled entity at the international arena even after they became professionals through passing amateur years. Therefore, KLGPA became prosperous and dealt a heavy blow in both domestic and foreign arena. Especially, the special feature for this is that it has led to the rise of interest for Korea at the international arena, and the growth of interest from domestic public and media for women’s sports.
Lastly, the key figure for successful Korean women’s golf is because of the characteristics of Korean parents and athletes, popularization of golf, and organized system for athlete training. In addition, the organized system for athlete training has played a catalysis role in improving the skills of amateur golfers, and the popularization of golf has not only rapidly increased the golf-related facilities; however, it also has provided more opportunities for junior golfers to learn golf and improved an environment for them to be cultivated.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구의 목적은 한국 여자골프가 해외무대에서 우수한 성적을 거두기까지의 역사적 배경을 고찰하고, 골프강국으로 거듭날 수 있었던 요인을 파악하여 한국 여자골프가 지닌 체육사적 의미를 규명하는데 있다. 따라서 이 목적을 달성하기 위한 세부적인 연구문제는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 한국 여자골프의 역사적 배경으로서 한국 여자엘리트스포츠는 어떤 과정으로 전개되었는가?
둘째, 한국 골프의 도입과 전개가 여자골프에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤는가?
셋째, 각 시기별 한국 여자골프는 어떻게 전개되었으며, 그 시기가 갖는 체육사적 의미는 무엇인가?
넷째, 세계화된 한국 여자골프의 성공요인은 어디에서 찾을 수 있을까?
이상과 같은 연구문제를 통하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다.
첫째, 한국 여자엘리트스포츠는 1950년대 이후 전개되기 시작하였는데, 1953년에서 1954년에 걸쳐 실시되었던 여자고등학교 간의 농구 대항전과 여자농구대표팀의 해외원정경기, 그리고 1958년 도쿄아시안게임에서의 메달획득으로 대중들의 관심을 이끌어 냈다. 이후 여자실업팀 창단, 1960년대부터 이어진 엘리트 스포츠 진흥 정책, 해외대회에서의 한국 여자선수들의 선전은 한국 여성스포츠를 세계에 알리는 계기는 물론 한국 여자엘리트스포츠가 성장할 수 있는 기틀을 만들었다. 또한 국내 사회에 존재하던 남녀차별에 대한 의식을 변화시킬 수 있었으며, 여성들에게는 선수로서, 지도자로서, 행정가로서 사회에 다방면으로 진출할 수 있는 기회가 부여되었다. 1990년대와 2000년대에 걸쳐 해외대회에서 한국 여자선수들의 잇따른 성공은 국민들에게 여자엘리트스포츠에 대한 관심을 부각시켰고, 그 결과 국내 여자엘리트스포츠의 입지강화와 함께 한국이 여자스포츠 강국으로서 거듭나는 계기가 되었다.
둘째, 일제강점기 우리나라에 도입된 골프는 시대적 특성으로 인하여 부정적인 인식이 상당히 강하였다. 그럼에도 불구하고 서울과 각 지방에 골프장을 건설하면서 각종 골프대회가 개최되었고 조선골프연맹이 창립되면서 스포츠로 정착되었다. 비록 세계2차대전과 6․25전쟁으로 잠시 골프의 맥이 끊겼으나, 서울컨트리클럽의 재건으로 그 맥을 다시 이을 수 있게 되었다. 특히 서울컨트리클럽은 한국 골프의 중심적 위치에 있었던 골프장으로 대한골프협회 창립, 한국 프로골프선수 태동의 본거지로서 우리나라에 골프가 엘리트스포츠로 발전할 수 있는 모태가 되었다.
셋째, 각 시기별 한국 여자골프의 전개양상과 체육사적 의미는 다음과 같다.
① 1950년부터 1969년은 여자 프로선수나 아마추어선수가 등장하지 않았으나, 대학의 골프부 창단 및 골프수업 실시, 한국 대학생골프회 조직 등으로 학교스포츠로서 골프가 정착되어 가던 시기였다. 그리고 서울컨트리클럽의 부인회의 결성은 여성회원들의 친목도모 뿐만 아니라 사회봉사 활동을 하며 당시 골프에 대한 인식을 바꾸고자 하였다는데 의미가 있다.
② 1970년부터 1989년은 골프관련 기관들의 대회 창설로 한국 여자아마추어선수들이 등장하기 시작하였고, 연령층 또한 중장년층에서 청소년층으로 변화되어 학원스포츠로 정착될 수 있는 기틀이 마련되었다. 그리고 1978년 국내에서는 처음으로 여자프로골프선수가 탄생되었다. 그러나 여자프로선수들에게는 국내 무대가 열악하여 몇몇 선수들은 일본으로 진출하였다. 그 중 구옥희 선수는 JLPGA투어와 USLPGA투어에서 한국 여자선수로는 최초로 우승하여 해외로 진출할 수 있는 초석을 마련하였다.
③ 1990년부터 1999년은 한국 여자골프선수들이 국내에서 왕성한 활동을 하면서 본격적으로 해외 진출 통해 도약한 시기였다. 여자 아마추어계는 골프선수로 성공하고자 하는 목적의식이 뚜렷한 주니어선수들이 증가하였으며, 여자 프로계는 한국여자프로골프협회의 창립으로 전환기를 맞게 되었다. 국내 여자프로계의 활성화를 위한 협회의 노력과 우수 아마추어선수들이 프로로 전향하면서 한국 여자프로골프는 질적으로 향상되기 시작하였다. 특히 1998년 USLPGA투어에서의 박세리 선수의 성공은 국내 여자선수들이 USLPGA 진출할 수 있는 계기를 만들었으며, 한국 여자골프계의 활성화는 물론 골프가 대중스포츠로서 전환되는 근거를 마련하였다.
④ 2000년부터 2010년은 한국 여자골프가 세계화되면서 골프강국으로 거듭나 아마추어계와 프로계가 국내외적으로 함께 성장한 것이 특징이다. 박세리 선수의 영향은 세리 키즈의 등장으로 이어졌고 그들은 아마추어 시절부터 프로로 전향한 후에도 한국 여자골프를 전 세계적으로 독보적인 존재로 부각시키는데 일조하였다. 이로써 한국 여자골프계는 그 어느 때 보다 활성화가 되어 국내는 물론 해외까지 그 영향을 미쳤다. 특히 세계에서는 한국에 대한 관심이 높아졌으며, 국내에서는 국민과 언론으로부터 여자스포츠에 대한 관심을 이끌어 냈다는 점에서 큰 의미를 지닌다.
마지막으로 한국 여자골프의 성공요인은 한국 부모와 선수의 특성, 골프의 대중화와 체계적인 선수양성시스템을 들 수 있다. 여자골프선수를 둔 부모들의 적극적인 지원은 선수들에게 긍정적인 영향을 미쳐 해외투어에서 성공할 수 있는 요인으로 작용되었다. 그리고 체계적인 선수양성시스템은 아마추어선수의 기량을 향상시키고 촉진시키는 역할을 하였으며, 골프의 대중화로 국내 골프관련 시설의 급증뿐만 아니라 골프를 배울 수 있는 기회가 더욱 증가되어 주니어선수들이 성장할 수 있는 환경이 더욱 개선되었다.
