그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육이 유아의 자기조절력 및 사회적 능력에 미치는 영향

This study aims to verify the effect of democratic civic education using picture book on child’s self regulation and social competence improvement.

There are following research questions to achieve the goal of this study.
1. What is the effect of democratic civic education using picture book on the child’s self regulation like?
2. What is the effect of democratic civic education using picture book on the child’s social competence like?

This study was performed to 60 children at the age of 5 by dividing them into 20 children for experimental group, 20 children for comparative group and 20 children for control group; it was performed weekly during total 8 weeks. Democratic civic education activity using picture book was directly performed by the research worker only to the experimental group under the consultation with home room teacher. This activity was performed by reading a picture book for the week and reporting the book. During the experimental period, comparative group took general democratic civic education under the guidance of home room teacher, and the control group took story sharing class following kindergarten life theme.
To measure self regulation of children, this study adopted a measuring tool of SCRS(Self-Control Rating Scale) originally developed by Kendall and Wilcox (1997), translated by Yoo Hye Jung (1998) and modified by Lee Ji Hyun (2001) to measure social competence, adopted a measuring tool of ISCS-P(Iowa Social Competence Scale: Preschool-Age) developed by Pease, Clark and Crase (1981)and translated by Song Na Ri (1992). We performed One-Way ANOVA on the collected data by using SPSS Win 12.0.

The results of this study can be summarized as below.
Firstly, children of experimental group who experienced democratic civic education using picture book marked overall high scores in self regulation compared to comparative group and control group, and there was statistically meaningful difference in the scores of sub elements of self regulation: self control, decreasing impulsiveness, and attention concentration.
Secondly, children of experimental group who experienced democratic civic education using picture book marked overall high scores in social competence compared to comparative group and control group, and there was statistically meaningful difference in the scores sub elements of social competence: leadership, hypersensitiveness and instability except competence.

Consequently, this study is meaningful that it suggested effective educational method which meaningfully increases children’s self regulation and social competence through democratic civic education using picture book.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육이 유아의 자기조절력 및 사회적 능력 향상에 미치는 효과를 검증하는 것이다.

본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위한 연구문제는 다음과 같다.

1. 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육이 유아의 자기 조절력에 미치는 영향은
어떠한가?
2. 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육이 유아의 사회적 능력에 미치는 영향은
어떠한가?

본 연구는 만 5세 유아 60명을 대상으로 실험집단 20명, 비교집단 20명, 통제집단 20명을 선정하여 8주 동안 주 1회씩 총 8회를 실시하였다. 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육활동은 실험집단에 한해서 담임교사와 협의 하에 연구자가 직접 활동을 실시하였다. 본 활동은 한 주 동안 한 권의 그림책을 읽어주고 독후 활동하는 방식으로 진행되었다. 실험처치 기간 동안, 비교집단은 일반적인 민주시민교육이 담임교사의 진행 하에 실시되었고, 통제집단은 유치원 생활주제에 따른 이야기나누기 수업이 진행되었다.
본 연구에서 유아의 자기조절력을 측정하기 위해서 Kendall과 Wilcox(1979)가 개발한 자기통제력 평정표(Self-Control Rating Scale : SCRS)를 유혜정(1998)이 번안하고, 이지현(2001)이 수정한 측정도구를 사용하였고, 유아의 사회적 능력을 측정하기 위해 Pease, Clark과 Crase(1981)가 개발한 ISCS-P(Iowa Social Competence Scale: Preschool-Age)를 송나리(1992)가 번안한 측정도구를 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS Win 12.0을 이용하여 일원배치 분산분석을 실시하였다.

본 연구의 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다.

첫째, 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육을 경험한 실험집단의 유아들이 비교집단, 통제집단 유아들에 비해 자기조절력 점수가 전체적으로 높게 나타났으며, 자기조절력의 하위요인인 자기통제력, 충동성 감소, 주의집중력 점수에서도 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였다.

둘째, 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육을 경험한 실험집단의 유아들이 비교집단, 통제집단 유아들에 비해 사회적 능력 점수가 전체적으로 높게 나타났으며, 사회적 능력의 하위 요인 중 유능성을 제외한 지도력, 과민성, 불안정성 점수에서도 통계적으로 유의미한 차이를 보였다.

결론적으로 본 연구는 그림책을 활용한 민주시민교육을 통해 유아의 자기조절력과 사회적 능력을 유의미하게 증진시키는 효과적인 교육 방안을 제시했다는 점에서 의의가 있다.
