Living in a world with the vigorous interchanges across national boundaries makes, learning foreign languages essential. The final goal of studying foreign languages is to have a social relationship with native speakers by communicating in the target languages. Conversation is one of the ways to keep a better relationship between people. Especially, compliments, which help elements in conversation developing smooth human relationships, are important. Therefore, in this study, I would like to propose helpful suggestions through comparison and analysis of Japanese compliments expressions with Korean expressions considering active exchanges between Korea and Japan since two countries exchange actively.
The method of this survey is as follows. First, I obtained three episodes from five talk show programs from each counrty that had common features. As the subjects of this study were participants in the 15-episode Korean and 15-episode Japanese talk shows, the inquiry was greatly expended than previous studies. The results of the study can be summarized as follows.
First, as the result of counting the number of spoken compliments showing on the both countries' talk shows, compliments accounted for 2.55% of 156 sentences a total 6,127 sentences Korean talk shows while on the Japanese talk shows, accounted for 2.88% of 155 sentences of a total 5,385 sentences. There was not significant difference between the two countries in their use of compliments but the percentage is slightly higher in Japanese talk shows.
Second, I compared and analyzed compliment expressions according to several types (appearance, personality, ability, ownership. etc). Ability (52.56%) was first, followed by appearance (23.08%), personality (14.1%), ownership (7.69%) and etc (2.56%) on Korean talk shows, whereas ownership (34.19%) was first, followed by ability (31.61%), appearance (20.65%), personality (9.03%) and etc (4.52%) on Japanese one.
In other words, that is, Koreans tended to make compliments on ablity. It seemed that Japanese equally complimented about all types, but speakers or listeners' ownership and ability were much more frequently complimented in Japanese.
Third, I compared and analyzed compliment expressions into parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, modifier and etc). Adjective (41.62%) was first, followed by verb, modifier (24.28%), noun (7.51%) and etc (2.31%) in Korea, whereas adjective (69.45%) was first, followed by modifier (17.22%), verb (8.89%), noun (3.33%) and etc (1.11%) in Japanese. It showed that both used adjective frequently, adjective was particularly more used in Japanese than Korean.
Last, I compared and analyzed words that were used to compliment. Adjective was mostly used in Japanese no matter which types of compliments were. I also found that adjective was only used for appearance, personality and ownership. Verb was most frequently used for ability in Korean.
