The Korea society is in the rapid progress of multiculturalism. This is because the influx of immigrants has been accelerated, according to the wave of globalization and the labor shortage. When the number of immigrants becomes 2.5%, a country has received official recognition as a multicultural country. According to the 2010 statistics, there are approximately 2.4% of the immigrants living in Korea. It means that we are already entered into the multicultural society. However, unfortunately Korea society is not prepared to be the multicultural society yet.
In particular, the social system and the educational program which help for the members of the multicultural families to be adapted to the Korea society are quite lacking. The children of multicultural families are emerging as new marginalized groups of education. Most of the programs for children of multicultural families currently conducted by Multicultural Family Support Center have been primarily focused on the education of language and social integration. However, the cultural education that improves the social adaptation as well as the creativity and the expressiveness is not being actively conducted. And the infrastructure and various conditions for those education are also insufficient.
This study aims to encourage the regional cultural facilities in developing and conducting dance education programs, which take advantage of expressing oneself using body among various cultural art education programs, for the children of multicultural families who relatively lack of social adaptability and expressiveness. Because the dance is very effective for children to develop sociality, creativity and emotion.
In summary, this study put it’s significance on resolving the education of children in multicultural families, which is one of the social education problems, by the means of dance and the space supported using regional cultural facilities. It should be noted that this study deals the social phenomenon and the issue in the view point of the arts management.
For this study, first, the theoretical foundation has been build through the literature review and leading research for : the multicultural education, the function of regional cultural facilities for children’s art and cultural education and the design of dance educational programs. The status survey and the problem identification of the regional cultural facilities have been conducted to design the system of the dance educational program. And, this study proposes appropriate operating system for education and effective program management by building networks between local cultural facilities. Also, the program revitalization plan is studied through cooperation with cultural exchange programs.
To organize consumer-driven educational program contents, in-depth interviews and observation for children from multicultural families after Korea dance and ballet training are conducted. The questions of the in-depth interviews are made up with the followings : 1. Satisfaction, 2. Educational effectiveness, 3. Teaching environment for designing educational programs, 4. Teachers and learning persons, 5. Contents and evaluation of contents.
The survey results in the conclusion that most of the children of multicultural families felt satisfied about the dance education and wanted it to be organized as a regular program. In addition, it is verified that the dance education is effective to improve the social adaptability, expressive power and communication skill for children of multicultural families.
The interviewees preferred to receive the education 1 times in a week with 4~6 students in one class. They also preferred to be learned by the professional instructor of each ballet and Korean dance and some of them wanted to announce the education results through the performances with peer group.
The children who are new to dance thought that low grade elementary course level content were suitable for themselves and proffered the Korean dance using tools. It is interesting that they wanted to modify the results of their dance during the class.
In this study, on the basis of these findings, the plan for regional cultural facilities to develop, operate and activate the educational programs for the children of multicultural families is presented. It should be noted here that this study builds up the basic materials which can be used to design the operating system and program contents.
To develop dance education programs for children of multicultural families in regional cultural facilities, the status survey and their needs of cultural education should be conducted in the first place. Most of multicultural education programs are consisted of language studies. But cultural education makes an important role to improve social adaptability of them.
Second, special values of multicultural education must be reflected on the dance education programs. The children of multicultural families are new marginalized groups of education. The literature review and leading research on multicultural education in the view of pluralism are conducted in this study.
Third, active participation of regional cultural facilities is needed. This study suggested network should be build between Multicultural Family Support Center and regional cultural facilities which have been running multicultural education and dance education programs respectively.
Fourth, the appropriate contents for improving social adaptability and expressive ability of the children should be prepared. By in-depth interview and observation, this study suggested dance education programs. Children of multicultural families preferred these programs: more than once a week, peer group of 4~6 children, spacious room with appropriate equipment, individualized instructor, Korean traditional dance, dance of their parents' country as a hobby.
Last, the idea and thinking should be changed. New education programs are not need. Dance education programs for children of multicultural families can be built easily using ongoing programs and facilities. These can be adapted to other cultural education programs.
The transition to a multicultural society has become an unstoppable flow. For long-term future of our country, the children of multicultural families should be raised as a regal Korean and a member of the global community. Cultural education is the fertilizer for this. The examples of successfully settled immigrants in other countries emphasize the importance of the cultural education. If we recognize the importance not too late and act rapidly, Korea will be able to leave a good example of multicultural education. The author wish that this study give the opportunity with promoting the research and practice of developing cultural education program for children of multicultural families.
