종교성이 내재된 무용작품분석에 의한 기독교무용발전에 관한 연구 : 앨빈 에일리 「Revelations」, 호세 리몽「The Traitor」, 조지 발란신「The Prodigal Son」을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

종교예술의 인식이 점차 다변화되고 다양성이 요구되는 상황 속에서 한 분야로 가치기준 없이 발전하고 있는 기독교무용이 종교적 측면과 예술적인 측면에서 그 가치가 요구되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 기독교무용의 역할이 사회에서 올바른 형태로 자리 잡을 수 있도록 이미 학문성과 예술성을 인정받은 종교성이 내재된 무용작품을 분석하여 더 나은 기독교무용의 발전을 연구해보고자 했다. 이를 위해, 먼저는 한국 기독교무용 작품의 사례를 살펴보며 문제점을 진단해보고,「계시」, 「배반자」, 「돌아온 탕아」를 중심으로 기독교적인 관점과 연관시켜 분석함으로서 기독교무용의 가치들을 구체화시킬 수 있는 실제적인 방향성을 제안해본다.

본 논문의 연구방법은 서술적 연구를 기본으로 문헌자료와 전문서적, 학위논문, 학술지논문, 기독교관련 잡지와 사전, 인터넷 사이트를 참고하였으며, 작품분석을 위해 DVD와 동영상 및 인터넷 영상자료를 병행하여 연구하였다.

이러한 목적을 달성하기 위해 연구자는 기독교무용의 종교적인 측면뿐만 아니라 예술적인 무용의 측면에서도 접근을 하며 현 시대와 상황에 맞게 적응하여 사회구조 내에서 기독교만의 양상을 지닐 수 있도록 규명해보았다.

서로 다른 시대적 환경 속에서 살았던 안무가들은 「계시」, 「배반자」, 「돌아온 탕아」를 예술적, 사회적, 종교적 삶의 맥락에서 자신의 기법으로 안무하여 20세기 무용발전에 큰 영향을 주었다. 이들은 종교적인 이미지를 상징화하여 인간의 내면적인 감정을 객관화하며 작품의 의도를 명확하게 전달하였고, 성서를 바탕으로 이해하기 쉽게 표현하여 그 시대적 상황을 대중들도 공감하도록 하였다.

위의 「계시」, 「배반자」, 「돌아온 탕아」의 분석된 내용을 기독교무용에 적용시켜 연구해보면 다음과 같은 제언을 할 수 있다.
첫째, 기독교무용작품은 성서에 기준을 두고 기독교의 본질을 잘 전달할 수 있도록 그 가치들이 두드러지게 창작되어야 한다.
둘째, 기독교무용이 종교적이고 예술적인 탐구라는 표상적 측면을 유지하며 개념의 정확성을 구체화시켜야한다.
셋째, 폭넓은 기독교무용의 활동을 위해서 전문적인 훈련이 뒷받침되어야 한다.
넷째, 기독교무용은 움직임과 소품, 의상 등 모든 것을 기독교적인 의미로 상징화시킬 수 있어야 한다.

급변하는 시대적 추이 속에서 기독교인뿐만이 아닌 비 기독교인들에게도 전달되며 다양한 양상으로 형성되고 있는 기독교무용은 지금까지는 주목되지 않았던 부분이지만, 앞으로는 체계적인 가치정립으로 종교적인 측면에 머물러 있던 것을 예술적인 측면과 사회적인 측면을 모두 포함하며 학문으로서의 무용학을 발전 가능케 하는 새로운 분야로 연구되어야 할 필요성을 절감한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

With the religious arts being diversified and exposed to the demands of diversity, Christian dance needs to be examined in both religious and artistic respects, while at present it is being developed without a rigorous standard of evaluation. Therefore, this study examines several pieces of religious dance works, which have won good recognition in scholarly and artistic societies, in order to explore the possible development of Christian dance into a well-regarded artistic form in our society. To do it, this study first evaluates some Korean Christian dance works to diagnose the problems built in them, and then analyzes Revelations (Alvin Ailey), The Traitor (Jose Limon), and The Prodigal Son (George Balanchine) in the persepctive of Christianity. Based on such analyses, it proposes practical methods to realize Christian values in dance work.
The present study is a descriptive study based on the information gathered from documents, treatises, dissertations, journal publications, Christian magazines and dictionaries, and the Internet websites. For the analysis of dance works, DVDs, moving images, and the visual data on the Internet have been used.
For the purpose of this study, the author examines Christian dance in terms of not only religion but also art in order to explore the unique realm of Christian dance in contemporary age and society.
The choreographers of Revelations, The Traitor, and The Prodigal Son lived in different historical environments, making great contributions to the development of twentieth-century modern dance by merging the artistic, societal, and religious contexts in which they were involved into their unique choreographies. They symbolized religious images as a way to reveal human's inner feelings: that way, their choreographies successfully conveyed their themes. Furthermore, the dance works derive their expressions from the Bible to make it easier for the contemporary audiences to understand them.
This study has applied the results of the analyses of Revelations, The Traitor, and The Prodigal Son to the evaluation of Christian dance, and made the following four suggestions.
First, the Christian dance work must be designed to transmit the essence of Christianity, by relying on the Bible and stressing Christian values.
Second, Christian dance must be able to configurate religious concepts accurately, while maintaining the representational aspects involved in religious and artistic explorations.
Third, Christian dance must be able to symbolize Christian meanings in choreography, properties, and costumes.
Although Christian dance had drawn little scholastic attention while being popularized among Christians and non-Christians as well with the rapid change of times, there are acute demands on the establishment of Christian dance studies which would be realized through systematic researches on Christian dance's artistic and social aspects, not to mention religious aspect.
