The purpose of this study was to investigate what kind of influence mathematical instruction using mathematical history would have on the mathematical communication and attitudes of elementary school students. It thus set out to build a instruction model using mathematical history, develop and apply mathematical history content, and examine relations between mathematical history and mathematical communication and attitudes. Thus the research questions were established as follows:
1. What kind of influence do mathematical instruction using mathe matical history have on the students' mathematical communication?
1) How does their participation in mathematical communication change according to the using of mathematical history?
2) How do the types of their mathematical justification change acc ording to the using of mathematical history?
2. What kind of influence do mathematical instruction using mathe matical history have on the students' mathematical attitude?
In an attempt to test those questions, two third-grade classes(the experimental group: 26, the comparative group: 27) at C Elementary School in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul participated in the study as the subjects. While the experimental group received instruction using mathematical history, the comparative group lecture-based instruction using the common textbook. Mathematical history content proper for the level of third graders was identified to give lessons to the experimental group. An instruction model was devised and introduced to apply the content. The students were asked to participate in a communication process through activities of solving a learning paper where mathematical history was applied in concentration in groups. A communication and attitude inventory was administered before and after the experimental group. The records of two classes were analyzed in protocols, and both quantitative and qualitative methods were employed to analyze gathered data.
In short, those research efforts led to the following conclusions:
First, instructions using mathematical history were helpful for increasing the students' participation in communication. They frequently exchanged ideas with their group members through a learning paper on mathematical history given like a project when they were not able to solve it for themselves. The phenomenon was translated into the experimental group's participation in communication after the experiment that was two times higher than before the experiment.
Second, instructions using mathematical history helped the students justify their opinions to others with mathematical logic. In common instructions, they tended to secure logical legitimacy with their arguments, resorting to their intuition, authority or past experiences. On the contrary, those who received instructions using mathematical history actively engaged in communication and logically approached problem solving, corresponding to the mathematical history content that took a high-dimensional and principle approach.
Third, instructions using mathematical history had positive influences on the students' mathematical attitude. Although quantitative analysis using a mathematical attitude inventory did not generate results of a statistically strict level, qualitative data including the students' essays after the experiment revealed positive changes to their mathematical attitude. Being fascinated by the freshness of mathematical history that they were not exposed to before, the students grew more interested and confident in mathematics and realized that mathematics was a very useful study in everyday life through mathematical history.
It is thus concluded that instructions using mathematical history can promote the students' participation in mathematical communication, induce them to do logical justification, and change their attitudes toward mathematics in a positive way.
Those findings and conclusions led to the following implications:
First, diverse mathematical history materials should be developed which are proper for improving the students' communication during math classes. Secondly, diverse instruction models should be developed which can promote and increase the students' communication using mathema tical history. Finally, diverse in-service teacher training should be extended in relation to mathematical history. If such efforts for changes are made continuously, mathematical instructions using mathematical history will be able to promote the students' mathematical communi cation and attitudes in a true sense.
